Title: Removal of limescale etc.
Post by: Adam on May 27, 2011, 08:29:06 PM
Several times in the past I have suggested dilute hydrochloric acid for this purpose but have been unable to suggest where to get hold of it in small amounts.  I have just noticed that it is available as "Spirits of Salt".  I have known this name for much of my life as part of the history of chemistry but I always assumed its use had died out generations ago!

I first spotted it in a small hardware shop in North Yorkshire but have since seen that it is available on line.

rather use a commercially available limescale remover which is smoother, environmentally friendlier and more effective.

I agree with Ivo. Citric acid based limescale removers work very well - there's no need for anything stronger. I use Lidl's W5 limescale remover - it's inexpensive and works very quickly. Barkeeper's Friend also gets limescale off easily and has another advantage in that it removes rust stains too. I suspect vinegar would also be strong enough to tackle limescale, though I've never tried it.
