Title: Blue jug/vase with clear glass snaked around
Post by: wolkenreb on June 08, 2011, 12:54:51 PM
Hello.  Here is a vase I picked up recently.  It is about 6.5 inches high and not particularly heavy.  Rough circle on the bottom (I don't know the correct terminology get but give me time!).  Would this be considered 'a collectable' or is it pretty uninteresting (as far as collecting goes).

Thanks for looking!

 :hi:
Hi Nancy - a picture of the base would help a lot! It helps a lot with any bit of glass.
I suspect this is something quite new, and probably not very interesting, possibly from the far east.

(Today, I am wearing turquoise and purple socks, with both cats and dogs floating under umbrellas on them.  :sm: )

THat is a bit of a difficult question. Is it rustic or antique? Similar items are still in production in Mallorca, in France and in Spain - and possibly other places as well. A good shot of the underside may help - but the rough circle is probably a snapped off blowpipe, not a pontil. Which would make it recent production from a small glass blower, and hard to identify....

Thank you Sue & Ivo.  Here's a picture of the base.  I think you're probably right, it doesn't have a quality feel to it (ha! as if I would know!).

(Sue, you're full name's not Suzanne is it?!  Interesting colour combo.)

I think Ivo's more likely to be correct than I am regarding the European origins of this jug.

Good shot of the base!

(No, sorry Nancy, I'm just a Susan, and I don't have a place by the river either...... but I am a margaret susan - making me a real peggy-sue.  :smg: )

That is a broken pontil mark - and I'm thinking it might be a Mallorca piece from Gordiola, circa 1960s. But as said, it is a confusable collectible so no guarantees.

That's interesting Ivo.  This glass business if very exciting.  Until now I've been more interested in pottery (but just dipping my toe in really).  I am about to google 'pontil'.  Thanks again.

There's a link to a pdf file in this thread, very useful list of glass terms.

I did have the exact same piece  -  and it had a Murano label on the base  -  although now can't find the picture, and may even have give the piece away  -  but no doubt that it was Murano.   Quite an unmistakable shape.

Thanks for the link Sue.  Gotta lot to learn . .  (I'm in Scotland too BTW - you're probably next door!)

Paul -- I'd say that is good news!  Have to find out more about Murano though!  It would be great if you could find your picture, just for ID sake.

Many, many thanks.

Hello Nancy  -  obviously hadn't given my example away - and pictures attached  -  and would agree with your size of 6.5".   Haven't a clue on age, mine came from a boot sale  -  but might hazard a guess at the '70's - '80's. :)

You are absolutely fantastic Paul.  I LOVE this place!

Today I've had 2 positive IDs when I really thought I had nothing.  You've made my day!
