Title: Frosted pink seated female figure
Post by: lyndhurst44 on January 10, 2007, 11:37:56 AM
Hi.
Here are items I picked up this morning from a charity shop. Help in identifying would be appreciated although I have a sneeky feeling that the deco figure is Bohemian and fairly modern.

Thanks again.

Mod: items split into separate topics as they are totally different

I have found the flower frog figure centre piece on a recent glassmessages thread link. My guess that it was Bohemian  was apparently right. The piece is by Sklo Union and designed by one Jitka Forejtova. Don't know how it is though.

Hi Bryn

Re your pink frosted figure, were you looking at this picture (http://www.black-poppy.co.uk/mc/unknown/thinker1.jpg) from www.black-poppy.co.uk? That has several differences to your figure.

1, the face. In the Sklo piece, the face is very indistinct and buried in the hands. Your piece is clearly looking outwards.
2, hair. Your piece has textured hair, whereas the Sklo piece has totally smooth hair.
3, The bustlines are completely different. The Sklo piece has one gentle curve from the belly to the apex of the breast, whereas yours, um, doesn't.
4, Seams. Does yours have a seam down the side?
5, Lines. Yours seems to be more cubist, for want of a better word.

The two figures are different, so the figure can not be Sklo. Maybe Marcus can help?

Edited to incorporate Frank's info below.

That attribution is correct so it is not Bryn's.

Hi Bryn,
Not sure of the origins of your piece, but clearly not the Jitka Forejtova item.
I know there are similarities, but the base is the major give-away.
I am not sure which came first, but two possible scenarios, this came first, with a possible re-design by Forejtova, or vice versa.
However, note that your pieces's base, is compatible with the idea of a stand-alone sculpture. Forejtova's was recorded as a stand-alone, but the Black Poppy site calls that idea into question.

Regards,
Marcus

Hi Everyone,
Oops ond oops again ??? ??? :o. I occassionally price some items for a charity shop  The pink lady came from another and i did actually purchase that one.
With regard to the pink lady I saw the web entry and really jumped to the conclusion that the figure shown may have had some facial damage and that is why i assumed they were the same. In hind site and another closer look I can see the difference. Hasty should be my middle name.  I can now see that the  base is also different so it could well be a stand alone piece.
The figure looked so similar that I missed the important bits. So it's back to the drawing board. Taking everything into consideration though It really does look remarkably similar.
Sorry!!!

Comparing the actual figure with your picture I have to disagree. But it could be yours was loosely based on this one.

I wouldn't worry too much Bryn - I frequently get things wrong (I'll throw a party the day one of my hunches is proved right!!!!)  By the way, I've handled one of the Sklo Union figurines (and rather stupidly didn't buy it  ::)) however I actually think your figurine is nicer - I like the cubist feel to it and the lovely pink frosted glass.  The Czech ones (or at least the one I handled) was very smooth and shiny and a not so attractive (girly) sort of muddy purpley grey colour.  Even though you haven't yet positively ID'd yours I do think it stands up perfectly well as an extremely decorative piece of glass in it's own right.

The lack of facial detail etc on that figure in the new photo's is much more obvious. I certainly would not have confused them with my figure if I had seen them when I visited Marcus's website.
One thing I did not previously noticed on my figure is that it has some form of impressed registration number in the base cavity which is unfortunately rather indistinct in places. Figures/numbers look like BIVE over N36098, there is then a gap followed by an oblique. Perhaps these figures may jog someone's memory.

Even without other details, the base is entirely different as Marcus pointed out earlier in this thread.

Hi Bryn,

I probably wouldn't have picked the differences a few years ago, either. It's all a matter of training the eye. Just recently, the whole Australian carnival collecting scene has had to become a lot more careful about noting very subtle differences in shape, angle, curves, relative sizes and distances, because they have had to deal with fakes - and because they'd never had the problem before, very experienced people have been fooled.

It's all good experience.

Hi Cathy,
Yes, some times though I can get a bit carried away. I think I've had my wrists slapped now and rightly so. I was so pleased in believing I had found a match that unfortunaty I did not give it a second look.
I think I became a bit over confident in my abilty after finding a match for one of my old identity questions last week, having been told on the board that it was something else. I was also reprimanded for my spelling on that occasion as well, phew, What a dunce!! ::). I think I have found a match for another of my earlier listings but I think I will keep it under wraps at least for the time being, let the wounds heal on this experience first, methinks.
These amateurs must know their place!! ;D
Cheers,
Bryn (not Brian) I think!

Your figurine is rather like the Desna pieces, go to www.timelesspath.com you could email them and ask if it is one of theirs.

Hi Dexter,
Sorry for the delay in replying, I'd got so used to getting the old email reminders from Glassmessages that I simply missed your message. Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I tried to get into the timelesspass site through your link but failed, but was able to get into the site using my search engine. As you remarked they do make similar styled pieces to mine although possibly a little softer in design. I will certainly follow up on your suggestion to Email them a picture.
Many Thanks once more your assistance.
