Title: Question regarding a "stump Lady" flower frog?
Post by: meegs on June 16, 2011, 02:19:53 AM
Hello Everyone,
I am assuming as this stump lady does not have piercings she would be a centre piece for a table, a bit like Bagleys Andromeda without the peg. Could someone with greater knowledge on these things please confirm or deny my theory!
Does anyone know who may have produced this piece - I realise from reading through some of this wonderful website it may not be possible!
But I would like to find out, so I know what I need to keep an eye for in the way of posy rings or bowls she would have come with.
Cheers
Meegs

From the colour she looks like Sowerby. Can we have a direct side on shot and a direct back shot (i.e. not looking down).  Being further away and then cropping might help with the focus but frosted uranium never wants to focus. I'll look at my Sowerby CDs later (work beckons :-( )

Thanks Christine,
Here are a couple more photos.
She has a base diameter of 3 1/4 inches and around 6 3/8 inches tall.
The black one is the same mold and that is the bowl she came with. The bowl is a good colour match but I dont think it was designed for a centrepiece as you can see it is more of a fruit bowl.

She's not Sowerby; her left leg is on top of her right leg. The Sowerby lady is the other way round.

Thank-you Christine,
A figure that was sold to me as Sowerby has bare breasts with her hands in her lap (right leg on-top of left), but when scouring the net The information I found showed the figure from Sowerby hands were in a similar position to this one but I hadn't noticed the leg position. Did Sowerby produce a bare breasted figure in this style? Or have any attributions I may have had for any of these figures gone out the window....
Thanks
Meegs

According to the Thistlewood's CDs, there seems to be two Sowerby ladies; one bare breasted and one covering them with her hands both with right leg on top. The covered lady is shown in the catalogue and the bare lady is found so frequently with the Sowerby 2565 bowl that she is almost certainly Sowerby.

She's not Sowerby; the Sowerby ladies have their right legs on top, not their left ones.

There's been a lot of confusion over these and definitely more than one maker. The 1956 catalogue shows the lady with her hands over her breasts and her right leg on top. The lady with bare breasts and her right leg on top frequently appears in a 2565 bowl, so I think it is safe to assume the right leg on top ladies are Sowerby and the others are not; particularly as Meegs' left leg on top matte black lady is in a colour not made by Sowerby when these were made (or at least not as normal production).

Wayne is very good but isn't always accurate; indeed he may not have noticed the legs.

Kitty-Kat1234,
Unfortunately I don't have a Sowerby example holding her hair in front but as I have found there are many different examples of these lovely ladies coyly holding there hair at their chest.....

The lady on the left with her hands in her lap (Thanks to Christine) I think I can safely assume is Sowerby.

Cheers
Meegs (who is now hunting for a Sowerby example!)

Kitty-kat1234
Andromeda is one of my favourites, depending on whether she is pegged it not she either sits in a bowl (with a flower block if she is pegged)  or in the centre of a posy ring.

For a quick resizing on a windows operating system I re-size my photos for posting by making a copy of the photo file and sending it to "my documents", opening the copy with "paint", clicking on the "image" button and then clicking on stretch/skew to reduce the image by equal percentages in the stretch part. (eg from 100% to 50% both horizontally and vertically). The larger the original file size the greater the reduction needs to be. I then save this file (making sure I save as a jpg). By checking the properties of the file you can see if you have reduced the photo to 125 kb or less. If you need to you can repeat the process. When I'm posting the photo I click the browse button here in the post reply section , find "my documents" in the "look in" drop down section, click thumbnails on the menu button (blue square looking button) and voila there is my image I can click on and open so it posts.
Hope this helps,
Cheers
