Title: Battuto by who though?
Post by: busterj on July 05, 2011, 08:51:50 PM
Hello everyone,

Recently bought this piece of battuto glass and was wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction as to who may have made it?
Have already ruled out Scarpa but have seen pieces by Barbini that have a similar treatment.

Any thoughts?

Sorry Rob but there is now so much Battuto on the market from Italy (generic) and from Poland and China that the chances that you have an original Murano big name gets very slim. The shape as well is recent, it is more a better interior designer piece than Murano art. Now wait what others have to say - because the option that I'm way off is open.

I've also seen battuto pieces made in India in my searches.  I saw a particularly lovely piece a while ago at the car boot made in China sold through M&S.  However, I also know it is quite hard to search for these items, having been searching for something for a while and not able to come up with the where from.  That's not to say your piece is not Murano, but just agreeing with Ivo that there is a 'lot' of battuto cut vases around at the mo, so searching could be difficult.

Similar items are showing up in stores such as TK Maxx at the moment, they are generally real bargains but they are not from named glass works. Expect to see them creeping on to ebay and in antiques centers.

There's tons and tons of Batutto stuff from China in TKMaxx - some of it it absolutely stunning. I was there studying it just a week or so ago.
I do think this is where your piece originates.

That's disheartening.

So how can you tell if glass is from China?
I see large pieces on e-bay that are clearly Chinese and quite beautiful in their own rite. This piece is very small, 5.5 cm in height. Is it safe to assume that the Chinese do not size discriminate?

Thanks for all your input.

While i have recently seen rims finished by polishing them flat, and even with arrised edges to them, on Chinese pieces the bases are not so well finished.
This piece, while being beautifully cut all over, has a wonky, un-properly finished rim and crude, un-properly finished base. It's also a perfect colour match for the Chinese pieces I saw.

Nice find dorian _graye!! You've just made my day.

Looks very similar to what I have with the exception of the lip and colour.
The height is bang on.

Thanks again. Hope does springs eternal!

I thought that the two pieces had the same value or intensity, as in they would have been created during the same time to display with one another.

One of the characteristics that threw me off originally was the size and the thickness of the walls.
All battuto pieces I've ever seen have been thick walled and very heavy.

I see what you're saying about the two displaying well dorian. The colours are very complimentary to one another.

Again I can't thank you enough for remembering that this thread even existed!

I had pretty much forgotten about the little piece. Will have to find a place to display it more prominently.

I came across your thread in my search for battuto pieces for myself.  I came across your thread after I had seen the one I posted.  Thought I would share.

That website is not the place I would trust for my attributions, what references do they provide?

Similar items have been available in TK Maxx recently.

They list Marina Barovier's book "Carlo Scarpa. I vetri di un architetto. Milano 1997, Abb. S. 106 (zur Form) as their source.

Hi there.

No nothing about it  --- but Svazzo has one on his site to *look at* as a reference,  HERE  (http://www.justglassmall.com/stores/svazzo/items/1105295/item1105295justglass.html)

Just thought I would throw that out there for you.

Nice piece you have !!

Do they mention if it is illustrated in that book? If so which page?

Svazzo has his described as "Being sold as a decorative item as it has no signature". At least that is accurate, a pity he has thrown "Barbini" and "Venini" into the title making no reference to them thereafter.

The lack of a signature bothered me on this one.  I've checked Scarpa: Glass of an architect and neither this shape not this colour is shown. The battuto is a little too imprecise for Venini, where each of the sections has the same shape. A friend has a very similar piece to the one here that it is stunning but not Venini either.
