Title: id confirmation for trailed bowl ID = Frank Hill for Whitefriars, #9031
Post by: Paul S. on July 23, 2011, 09:20:56 AM
The colour appears to be 'sea green' - and the bowl shape and trailing have strong similarities to W/Fs 9031.        Problem arises with the size  -  Leslie Jackson doesn't provide any dimensions, but says there are two sizes, and the W/Fs. catalogues indicate 15, 12 and 11 inches.       This example has a diameter of approximately 7.5"  -  has the right sort of 'ding' and quality ground/polished pontil mark.    Grateful for confirmation that 9031 was produced in this smaller size, such as this one, and thanks for looking. :)

I know this has been discussed on wf.com but I can't remember the details, however I do know it was decided these are definitely right and that there were more sizes - although I can't remember the pattern numbers.  I have one in Ruby which is 6 inches in diameter.

Hopefully a more knowledgeable WF person will be able to clarify, but it might help to attract their attention by adding WF in the title of this thread ;)

many thanks Leni  -  however, in view of past mis-attributions (guesswork on my part) - I've learned to be a little more circumspect when suggesting provenance. :)   Look forward to further thoughts from members.

Hi Paul, definitely a 9031 they were uncatalogued in this size but plenty about around 7" or 8"
A 1930s design by Frank Hill on of the best in my opinion.
A link to a thread where these were discussed.

thanks Chris  -  and agree this is a very good design, which may well have gone all the way through to the 1957 catalogue - but you will know better than me on that point :)
I particularly like the 'double line effect' that the threading produces when viewed from above - very attractive.      Anyway, thanks for the confirmation, which appreciated.    Is that a W/Fs. stem vase next to the swan?     I don't have time to read the original link this evening, so will look properly tomorrow.      thanks again.

Made between 1938 and 1957. The bud vase is the less common 9396 at 7" most of the ones you see are the 9484 and 9485 at 7.5" and 10.5" which are very common,  some in the link below but 3 are less common colours.
