Title: Sowerby or who?
Post by: Frank on July 28, 2011, 10:50:38 AM
Pamela and I would like to get a certain ID on this pink pressed glass bowl. Pamela has it attributed to Sowerby but we are unable to confirm this...

Nominally 21cm diameter (8ΒΌ inches)

Tsk patience Frank, it's too soon to be bumped!  :ooh:   Seriously, is the bottom level or curved, as it appears in the photo?

:-[ just been searching for ages on this one after finding on Pamela's site... yes curves up flat centrally. It might have got the Sowerby attrubtion on Pamela's on the GMB in the past but cannot find that either...

I was idly wondering, as it's not flat, if it might be a shade for a glass based lamp... but it might not be deep enough....?

Have checked through Glen's Sowerby cd's and Angela's Bagley book and it's not in either of those... nor can I spot it in Chris Stewart's Davidson book.. process of elimination going on here...   :X:

This bowl often turns up in the UK paired with a stump girl figure. On the sets I've seen the stump girl looks a little like Sowerby, though as has been discussed elsewhere on here, other firms also made very similar figures.

There's a set on ebay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320723501417

I had one of these in the past and I'm sure it was ID by someone who is a member here as being Sowerby.  My bowl had a just about seen square rim on the base so it sat properly.  I'll see if I can find record of the ID and a pic. of the base.

Hi Anne can you find the old thread? I have looked at hundreds of Sowerby threads and Glen does not know it either. Seeing it with figure might help have to go see those discussions... hmmm only things I could find and lacks image but seems to be a different bowl but same figure! http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,8750.0.html which David is positive is Sowerby. Looked up stump/praying girl/figurine combos.

Afraid not Frank.  :-[   On reflection it could well have been on a different message board and my only remaining image is dated more than three years ago - seen here.  I can't remember if the figurine was bought with the bowl or whether I just thought that they were a good match and placed them together, but they were sold on together as they seemed a good match.
