Hi all,
Can anyone help me to identify the origin, maker or date of this beautiful piece of art glass. I'm not sure as to what it should be either a brick, slab, tile or paperweight. The piece is of quite high quality and has the depth of colour and quality texture similar to a Whitefriars textured piece. The piece is very heavy and measures 4.75" high x 4.75" wide x 1.75" depth. Hope you can help.
Fisher.

What a wonderful piece! It looks like a seagull sitting on a mooring post with the water rippling round the base of the post.......we MUST find out who made it.......where did you find it and where are you located, Fisher?

Hi,
Thank you so much Madam Medusa and Rosie for your very kind comments about this piece. I agree with Rosie's very well described description of this piece. To answer Your questions Rosie I am located in glorious NorthYorkshire and won it in a boxed lot at auction.

Wow! What a win!!
I am looking at all the permutations of glass brick, block, bird, seagull in art glass that I can......off to look up more.... :wsh:

Wow that was a quick reply Rosie, I have tried to search for it too but for the moment come up short. I am sure I have seen this piece before quite some time ago when I was doing some research for another piece, but for the life of me I can not remember who made it nor it's origin. I remembered the design and form the moment I saw it it the box, and when I picked it up WOW it is so tactile and heavy.

I'm thinking perhaps a glass company on the coast.....bearing in mind the subject..........it does have a scandi look though.......I wish I had seen it!

I am now thinking possibly Skruf or Pukeberg as the maker. I had wondered if it might be Blenko, but can't find anything at the moment that looks as though it could be theirs.....on with the search....see you back at the Googlebox Madame Medusa!! Fisher, you will have to come and cook lunch as I haven't got time, doing this search!!

I think this looks the same.... is it?

I will add "Blenko?" to the title.
After a quick browse through Blenko catalogues (http://www.blenkoproject.org/blenkocatalogs), at least for the 70s and 80s, I am not sure that the item in question is shown!

I am still looking for another Don Shepherd piece that is linked to Blenko. Interestingly, according to this link:
http://www.blenkocollectors.com/blenkodesigners/shepherd.htm
the eagle block mentioned in an earlier part of this thread: http://afterglowretro.com/2011/07/25/mid-century-american-eagle-paperweight-ice-block-maker-unknown-circa-1950s/ is shown as being Don's work. It can still be seen here, as the eBay link has long since expired.
The link to the seagull block does imply it was a special design by Don Shepherd, so on with the search, however as the design is so similar to the Eagle one, I can't help thinking we are on the right trail and were nearer than we thought in 2011. :)
