Title: Caithness perfume bottle?
Post by: angel2 on August 10, 2011, 03:10:58 PM
      Hi all!       :hi:

I was told this bottle was Caithness but I hate Caithness with a passion but quite like this.
Would that be correct?

Seems a bit extreme...

There has been some very fine quality glass made by Caithness, remarkable variety too.

Unlikely, not good enough.

... but I hate Caithness with a passion...

Why

Get Mark Hill's new book, might change your mind.

The picture is so small I cannot see the base detail clearly - but it looks as if it is quite roughly finished. The shape also doesn't correspond to any Caithness ones I have seen.

I agree with Frank - it doesn't look good enough to be a Caithness perfume bottle - they are exceptionally well finished -( I have a whole cupboard full of them)  Even the cheaper unlimited versions are well made. The limited editions are even better.

I do not like the speckly small Caithness run of the mill stuff either, even though the quality is still good - it is just not my taste,  but I do collect the higher end and limited edition stuff  -  it is absolutely stunning!

I suggest you do look at Mark Hill's recent book.

     Thanks all, for your comments and interest.      :kissy:

The reason I've hated Caithness is in my limited experience I've only come across the speckly, run of the mill stuff. If I see better, I'll revise my opinion sharpish!
I'll consider buying Mark Hill's book!

Yes, the base is roughly finished but smoothed (don't know what you would call that).
Sorry for the poor quality pics.

You pictures could be much bigger. Resize them (a high-res pic) to about 700 pixels on the longest dimension. You have 125kb per picture, not per post. It could be a studio piece. Dimensions help too, as would a base shot taken at an angle so we can see what is going on.

Hi angel2 - we'll convert you to the good stuff yet - check out some of the photos in this link - some mine and some from other Caithness fans. Not a speckledy bit in sight.

     Oops!      :-[

I did a bit of feet treading there I think, or was that foot in mouth? !
:ooh:     Is it safe to come out yet? !
Seriously, thanks everyone, will do more useful images tomorrow but it does seem to be as I suspected, that this piece is not Caithness.

Hi Angel2 - of course it is safe - we all have individual likes and dislikes  ;D

I thought the shape of your bottle looked vaguely Mdina'ish - but they are (or at least the ones I have )  finished with a smooth polished base - but this (I think fairly modern) Mdina piece currently for sale on Ebay looks very similar - so possibly some Maltese influence somewhere??

     Hi Jak!       :girlcheer:

Thanks for your message. I agree about the Mdina vase looking similar. Certainly, other Mdina shapes are even more like my vase but not the decor (or the base finish) although they do favour colours of the sea. Am going to do a couple more clearer pics when it gets lighter.      :sun:
