Title: Is this a gulvvase?
Post by: fabuleuse on August 11, 2011, 01:19:42 PM
Hi all

I wonder if anyone here can help identify this item - it's of a very similar style and shape to all the gulvvases I've seen, but despite searching the www and all my reference books, I can't find any info out about it - there's only mine and one other I have found with handles!

It's 32cm tall, and very heavy, and there's a pontil mark on the base.

Thanks in advance - any info appreciated!

I believe its a decanter and should have a globe stopper , its in several books but i have forgotten who made them .

It's not a gulvvase. It looks the sort of thing that could have been produced in Italy or Poland (Krosno)

Ooh, you guys are quick!

Thanks for your replies - I remember seeing an indentical one for sale on a website some time ago, and typically for me I can't remember where.  It was shown on the website as a gul vase, which is why I took that as my starting point.

It would make sense as a decanter, although if it is one it's a shame I don't have the stopper.  Anyone want to hazard a guess as to who the maker might be, please?

Thanks again,

Lulu  ;D

ETA: duh, just realised you gave me a couple of hints Christine - off to check up!

hello Lulu  -  despite jp's comments - and he's way out ahead of me in knowledge - I wasn't aware that this one had been nailed down........but I'm often wrong.    We've had these up before, I seem to remember and - not that it will help immediately - but some of the comments in this link where I posted my amber example may be of interest.   http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,33108.msg179353.html#msg179353      Contrary to my original thoughts, there should be a stopper, I seem to remember.

Nuutajarvi or Holmegaard seem to lie dormant in my little piece of brain  .

I have seen them a couple of times since with stoppers and many times without . Honest would i kid you ?NAHHH ;D

I saw one today at a flea market with an ill fitting stopper that was not original and lo, you have seen another on ebay with a stopper that does not match (I saw another three this weekend that had no stoppers).

Crikey, even MORE replies  ;D

I've been to quite a few antique / flea markets since I originally posted this and haven't spotted another.  I'll keep an eye on the one on ebay, I'd be interested to see how much it finally sells for!

Thanks again for your advice, guys.

I've been trying to identify a couple of other pieces of glass to sell on my website and have found an example of this decanter - with a stopper! - for sale for £15 on another website.  If the ebay one sells for a decent price I might just have to buy it for resale.....!

Usually touted as either Holmegaard or Kaj Franck for Nuutajarvi - but very very definitely by neither.

Krosno, Poland, gets my vote - they're often to be found in typical Krosno colours.
