This was my third buy. It wasn't till I got it home that I realised I had bought a similar one a few years ago for my sister from TKMaxx and the label stated that it was made in Poland. Otherwise, I haven't a clue. This vase is just over 10" tall, the base has a smooth flat circumference then shiny and concave in the middle. It is a grey with a hint of blue. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've seen Riihimaen glass vases very like this, but they were always signed...... :)
-
Here's a pic of the finish at the top of the vase. Not flat but a kind of rounded lip - flattened when neatly tucked inside. I'm really coming along in my glass terminology! (not)
-
Not Riihimaen then.....
-
Rosie - do you mean definitely not Riihimaen because of the way the lip (need correct word here - rim?) is finished? Could it have been Riihimaen even though not signed? Does the finish of the base tell us anything? So many questions . . .

You might like to look at some Finnish Sites (Riihimaen is Finnish) :-

Not definately Nancy, but I always thought that Riihimaki / Riihimaen glass had a ground lip.....however, looking at the Flicker link that Ross has just give, I see two that are similar to yours.....did you look?
-
Thanks for the interesting links Ross. I had never heard of Riihimaen until Rosie mentioned it. There were a couple of vases that are similar (ie the large expanse of clear glass at the bottom and the general shape - although not narrowing so much at the top). So perhaps a possibility but I'm still open to suggestions.
But you're right Rosie, most of them have a ground lip.
-
A few Riihimaen vases have heat finished rims, many are ground and polished though.
Is this vase round when you look from above, I just wondered if it was vaguely triangular?
Strombergshyttan could be another possibility but then so would nearly every Scandinavian maker of the last 50 or so years....

Actually it's oval, quite a thin oval, if you know what I mean.
-
Is the pontil dip central or slightly off to one side?
-
My impression is that it is not Finnish but comes from a Swedish glasshouse. Maybe Sea or Alsterfors - not expert enough in the area.
Ross
-
Twas a bit tricky looking at the pontil dip because the vase has water and flowers in it now! However, definitely central.
Will take a look a Swedish glasshouses Ross. Thanks.

:sc: :sc: :sc: Trust a thrifty Scot to use a vase in a way it was intended for! :24:

If I was really thrifty I wouldn't have bought it in the first place, considering the state of my bank balance!
-
seen some similar Kosta Johansfors
-
Thanks CV. I've had a look around and found one that was almost identical, except it was signed and had a smooth flat base. Do you know if they were ever produced unsigned and with the central dip in the middle of the base?
-
The central dip is usually there because that much glass had to be removed to get rid of the pontil mark. Sea did this a fair bit. Here's a Sea piece I was going to suggest before.

Thanks David! I had looked at SEA a bit but will look some more now. The rim and base certainly look very similar to those in my vase. I find this all so interesting - just want to find out where things came from. Including you - Langhaugh looks Scottish - am I right?
Nancy

Yes, Nancy. Born in Edinburgh, raised in Galashiels, left in 1971.

Having had a good old trawl, I'm thinking maybe Kosta Boda or Orrefors based on 3 factors: shape, finish of the rim and finish of the base. Would anyone agree/disagree that either of the two could be possible?
-
Kosta and Orrefors would be signed. More to the point, I don't think it looks like either. I still think Sea or something similar.

Clear cased grey vases by a variety of makers, including Orrefors (always signed) , Sea, Gullaskruf, Zwiesel, and others. I would believe that if the piece from Tkmaxx said ' made in Poland' you'd be looking at Krosno - or am I being too simple?
-
The thing is the shape. The only matching shapes I could find (with the same lip and base) were Orrefors and Kosta Boda, but OK, I'm obviously barking up the wrong tree there. The vase I'd mentioned being from Poland/TKMaxx was another I had bought previously, not this one. Ivo, the vase 4th from the left in your pic looks about the right shape (ignoring the one in the bottom corner). Is this one of yours and is it anything like mine apart from shape (ie lip and base)?
Thanks both for your help with this.
-
The tall one is actually Gullaskruf - just like the third one from the right which is a smaller version of the same. Polished out pontil with a stand ring, flat oval body section and the grey has a slight bluish tinge.
-
Sorry to be a pain Ivo, I'll got out tomorrow and buy 'The Almost Forgotten Story of the Blue Glass Sputum Flask' (a MUST for bed-time reading) tomorrow to make up for it! I meant this one.
-
That is a light amethyst somerso with a cut top and circular section and fully unidentified. Bottom is mould finished as no subsequent work has been done to the top....
-
Thanks Ivo.

On that picture I can't see any vase made by Gullaskrufs glasbruk.
