Title: Pair of cased glass jars, gold pattern, white dots
Post by: CultureVulture on August 14, 2011, 10:57:14 PM
These look oriental and possibly period 20's to 40s. Two matching glass jars. Looks like white case in pinky red to make the pale pink. Very delicate. Gold leafy pattern and white raise dots. Gives a feeling of milk glass but i dont they are. Both 7cm dia rim, 9cm dia waist widest, approx 7cm tall. Not what id normally go for but theyve got very old appearance before Mid20th C.

All the best im flumoxed. If satsuma did glass id reckon it may look like these.

Wot the others said. The white dots will be enamel. Late 19th/early 20th century.

Thanks it depends what you means by beads the gold pattern is not made of tiny round beads. Looks more like tiny random size shape drips (like beads of oil on water)

That will be coralene. The beads are heated to fuse them to the glass, so they will melt a bit.

Personally I wouldn't call coralene anything in which the beads weren't obvious - that was the whole point of coralene.  Enamel was applied first and the beads stuck to it, and when fired the enamel fused to the glass and the beads at a lower temp than that which would melt the beads themselves.

In some cases of cheap "coralene" the beads with affixed with glue (? or paint?) and come off easily.  It could be that the pocks in the gold-colored area may have once held beads.

Below are a couple examples of coralene by Mt. Washington from the Corning Museum, and this is a link to a different style of coralene http://www.wpitt.com/artglass/vic223.jpg and one to an image of the type decoration it got its name from: http://borgmansantiques.com/dynapage/IP219.htm - you can see here how distinct the beads still are after firing.

I'm not sure I'm adding anything here, especially since my knowledge is so limited, but I would have kind of thought the same as Krsilber, that if it wasn't round beads then it isn't coralene.  However....could this type of onlaid decoration also be coralene, just a different 'kind' of coralene?  I have seen this yellowish orange decoration before but I can't remember where.  Or is it called something else entirely - is it perhaps simply a type of enamelled decoration?  Interested to learn something here  :sun:

I think it's just lesser-quality coralene but it's difficult to tell without handling.
