Title: Unusual Pontil Mark - Green Glass Jug
Post by: goyjus on August 21, 2011, 05:55:41 PM
Has anyone ever seen this pontil mark before? Does it give a clue to age or maker?

Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks.

That is unusual, it looks like the iron or gadget was made to reduce finishing work on the base... so probably unique to a factory.

I can't recall seeing it before. Thanks very much for enhancing the image for me - I'm not great on the technical side of things, so much appreciated, Frank!

I've seen this sort of pontil mark on pieces from Imperial, Fenton and Durand that were made in the 1920s/30s. This kind of punty may be credited to the small group of European skilled glassworkers who worked, in succession, in those three plants. We think this punty would get good adhesion between the punty and the object and would be better for "cracking off" because the resulting mark or scar would be somewhat easier to finish by grinding/polishing.

Great stuff. Very interesting. Many thanks for taking the trouble to get back to me!
