Title: Pink & Frilly - New, old, interesting?
Post by: goyjus on August 25, 2011, 10:00:08 PM
I've bought another piece that I can't tell whether it's got some age or a TK Maxx special.

Has a round, polished pontil.

Any opinions appreciated...

I don't think you should blame the Chines for that... more like a kid learning the ropes in dad's studio  ;)

Ah! Good job it was only two bob and a toffee apple then! Cheers for posting Frank.

Did you show us this the other day? Can we have a base picture and have you shone a UV light on it?

Hi Christine. No - this is the first and only time I've posted this one. Haven't shone a UV light on it. Will get a base picture up - most probably tomorrow.

Someone has, which makes me wonder if it's new "old".

Oh ok. I have a vague feeling that I've seen something like it somewhere before but can't quite pin it down. What's the UV light thing about? Should this be able to tell/show me something?

I think that one is definitely much older. I was wondering if the one I posted might be 50s or 60s at the absolute oldest...

No, it was the same vase design. Did you buy it on ebay?

Yes I did. Perhaps the seller thought to check it out on here first...

No, that's where I'll have seen it. In that case, I would say late 19th/early 20th century is highly likely. (My doubt was based on the fact that two identical Victorian vases either come as a pair from the same place or months/years apart, not days apart.)

Really? I never imagined it would be that old. When I saw it, it reminded me somewhat of 50s Murano pieces - but that's probably down to my untrained eye. Do you still want to see a shot of the base Christine?

Yes and to know if it glows bright green under a UV light if poss.

OK, Christine. Should I take its glowing bright green as a good or bad sign????

Very good. It means it contains uranium.
(the energy from Uranium bumps the wavelength of the purple UV light up into the green spectral range)
This thing reminds me of knitted lady toilet roll holders - it gives me the heebie-jeebies...  :wsh:

Glowing green means it's uranium glass.

No glow, I'm afraid.

Sue - I can see what you mean. Maybe I'll pop it in the loo ;-)

Here's a shot of the base.
