Apologies for picture. Hope you can make it out.
-
Joseph Said.
This image has been confirmed by Ron Wheeler and, I believe, by Said.
-
That's great. Many thanks for this Sue!
-
Any chance you might post a pic of the whole beast? I did get a peek at it elsewhere - I think it's a truly fabulous shape.
I know it's not a Harris shape - it's a later Said variation, but I really think these are some of the most attractive Fish around - especially in the brown colourway. I have three, (plus one variation on the shape) - they look spectacular en masse!
-
Sure, I'd be happy to Sue. The photo on my flickr account is quite poor, so will try and get a good shot in natural light tomorrow morning. Btw, how easy is to date Isle of Wight pieces? I have a bottle with stopper signed Michael Harris, Isle of Wight. Can start a thread on this tomorrow if you think you could help me out with some more info.
-
It should be reasonably easy to at least roughly date Isle of Wight Studio Glass.
Are you another Harrisophile in the making?????????? :sun:
-
Kind of more by accident than design I guess. I bought the piece you've identified as being by Joseph Said at a car boot when I was about 16 and it lived with my mother until about five years ago. The other pieces I've blagged from her as my interest has begun to shift more from pottery to glass. I have a charger too - but this is unsigned and has a nibble out of it.
Will post some pics. Cheers Sue!
-
Is the charger Mdina or IoWSG?
Chargers are fairly scarce from either - lack of signature doesn't mean anything. (except in terms of money ::) - personally, I prefer unsigned, because they're not so expensive - I love the glass - a pawmark doesn't add anything for me).
I think, given the scarcity, a wee bit of damage can be forgiven. Could it be restored?
-
It's Mdina. I always thought it was strange that such a substantial piece wasn't marked. But, as you say, a signature makes no odds to the beauty of the piece.
Interesting you should mention restoration. I bought a great jug a few weeks ago that had been in the wars but it was so cheap I couldn't leave it there. It's lost the end of what was once, probably, a very elegant extended spout. I've been wondering if it would be possible to do anything with it. But I wouldn't know where to go or who to ask. Any tips gratefully received...
-
Sue, I originally thought these two pieces in the link were Dobson, however, looking again at Said's paw mark they do seem to be closer to his signature. Do they look Said's paw print to you..?

Sue - have just been googling Michael Harris to try and build up my knowledge and found what looks like my charger - bottom of third photo down on this link:

-
So I guess that points to its being IOW not Mdina...
-
This is a confirmed (by Ron) Eric Dobson signature, Greg.
I think yours is Said.
Yes, Goyjus your charger is IoWSG - Tortoiseshell pattern.
-
Thanks Sue, appreciated.

-
You do know you can just download those images (from the pics I've posted) for yourself, Greg, don't you?
-
Thanks, wasn't sure to be honest Sue.
It did cross my mind earlier that it would be good to have a definitive copy of each for future reference.
;)
-
I can see that I'm going to have to buy the book!
-
I would recommend grabbing a copy before they run out.... Books can get hideously expensive once they are out of print.

I've just tried to download an image - not too successfully! This may be because I haven't yet got to grips with some of the stranger vagaries of Mozilla - it says it's got the image and it shoves it somewhere, but won't let me tell it where to put it, or tell me where it's put it!
Have a go, but if it doesn't work, I'll email the images to you.
Yup, copies of the book are running out and sadly, I believe it's not going to be reprinted.
-
I managed to download and save both copies on my PC after a couple of attempts. It did work better when I double clicked the original image to enlarge it and then right clicked on the image with the mouse and then selected 'save as'. Sure these will both come in handy.
Thanks again Sue.
-
Just remember to save them with the correct name attached!
-
Wow. Is that your collection John? You have some beautiful pieces.
Here's a shot of my fish. Still not brilliant. Any tips on how best to photograph? Don't think I'm going to be worrying Mario Testino any time soon...
-
Might help if I attached the picture....
-
Here's a shot of the chippy charger. Chip is visible in the front. Does anyone know if anything can be done with it?
-
Put the chip to the bottom when displaying it - once it's up on a stand, the chip will be hidden in the base bits of the stand.
That chip can't be polished out without changing the whole shape of the plate, so it's best to leave it and just put it out of sight.
