Title: Glass Help Please. Is this Murano Piece Fratelli Toso? Other? Thanks
Post by: Azorcawa on August 29, 2011, 04:43:17 AM
Hello all I am new to this board, and hopefully I can find some help id'ing what I have been told may be a Fratelli Toso Millefiori Murano art glass piece. It measures 9 inches tall and is almost 7 inches wide. I believe it is cased glass, as you can see a definite layer on the inside surrounded by the caned glass. It has a light gold spray paint effect going on on the outside. Anyhow, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Landon :X:

Hi and welcome to the Board.

It is millefiori, but I've seen these pieces attributed to Campanella, another Murano company. I have a piece with the same canes and the same golden surface. I'd be interested to hear what TxSilver and Tam Bam say.  It's a nice piece, just not as old as some of the Fratelli Toso millefiori.

Thank you, it was an auction find. Hoping someone can confirm its maker for me! :help:

This is a toughie. Definitely not F. Toso. Probably not Campanella or Bucella. They had gold sparkling on the surface of all the pieces I've seen from them. It could have been so many companies. The only thing I can say is to put "millefiori vase" (minus toso) into Google and see if you can find this pattern of canes. It may be difficult to find.

I suspect that at least some of the canes could be regular, and still current, Moretti produce which are sold worldwide. But overall, I would think this vase was made in Murano.

Anita:

I think it does have the gold sparkling effect, although it's not too clear in the photos.  Azorcawa writes, "It has a light gold spray paint effect going on on the outside." That's what led me to Campanella.

See my piece:

PS I think it's relatively recent, 1970's at earliest.

Yes, to all questions. Yes you can repost the pictures as you see fit for better identification. Yes, it does have gold fleck all over the outside of the piece. It is stunning held at the right angles in the light. Looks like real gold. Is it considered cased glass when a clear layer of glass is under the outside layer of canes? this one appears to have that going on as well.
Thanks to you all for your help, this is very informative!

The small bowl shown in the above post shows the same kind of gold flecks in it that my piece has.

Caught not reading the entire post.  :-[ Shame on me. So it does have gold. Still I do not think Campanella just because the canes do not look like what I am used to for them. I'll have to see if I can find some Bucella and Gambaro & Poggi to see how their canes are done.

Note the way the canes on your glass look like they are cut out with scissors, David, and all are facing outward. Azorcawa's vase has some that are turned sideways and are not so cut-out in appearance. I don't know if Campanella did any like this.

Quickly looking at some Gambaro & Poggi millefiori, I think it could be them. Maybe, perhaps. We'll have to find the vase.

David's bowl does have some "side-on" canes. There are at least one white-yellow, two white-blue, one green-white and a purple-white one.

We are going to have to find this vase. I found some similar things for each of the three companies mentioned, but nothing exact yet.

Yes, I believe that the bowl shown in Davids post is made by the same maker as my vase. They are very similar canes, and there layout looks like it could have been done by the same person.

Maybe those of you who have bought some of these types of pieces in the past could give me a price range on this piece. I am still not sure if I am going to sell it. I think if it would bring less than a few hundred dollars I'd rather just hold on to it and start my own collection. What do you all think of the value of this piece maybe mid range asking price? :X:

I've been calling my piece simply Murano, but it came from Design & Arts, usually reliable, who sold it as Campanella. In other words, I am not totally convinced, perhaps because, to me, it's from one of three roughly equally proficient Murano companies who used the same canes.

It's an interesting discussion about how to distinguish between the companies, though.

Price?  Very hard to say right now as the Murano market seems very low for pieces like this. I paid well under $100 for this piece, which is smaller than your piece. Several hundred dollars seems very unlikely. The start of a collection? What a great idea. But then I'm notorious for being very reluctant to sell anything.

Has anyone considered Bucella Cristalli, Murano as the maker for this vase?

I found this piece attributed to Campanella by a  reputable auction house.  What do you think?
