Title: Black Hen on nest with mark? for id
Post by: yesvil on August 29, 2011, 04:02:53 PM
I found another of these at today's carboot. This I'm hopfull has some age and is not a modern reproduction (based on the items being sold with it)

The bottom has what could be a mark:  "B" maybe? or "H"? Does this register with anyone

It's really quite heavy with a very thick base. The size details are:

Height - 120mm (Top of head)
Width - 95mm
Length - 125

Hi there:
I am not sure of the maker -- but I know there is a Book about them.    See HERE  (http://www.goantiques.com/detail,glass-hen-nest,1979051.html)

I think they were made in lots, and lots of colors too.  Someone else may know the ID pronto, but I have just seen them.

You need a whole *Chicken Coop* of them

Boyd (US) is likely... as to whether or not it is a reproduction/re-issue/etc. with the Boyd mark added to the mould is another question. But you should be able find details on the web as they have quite a large following.

Thank you Frank & Rose

Frank - The Boyd mark seems to be quite different to this one (Link below) and I do get the feeling that this is older then 1970s when they seem to have started but I may be wrong - often am! Anyway I have sent them an email and await their response.

Your hen with the cap B is in all probability by Harold Bennett, Guernsey County Glass of Cambridge, Ohio. Harold pre-dates Boyd by a close to 15 years & he had a ton of old molds as well as Cambridge molds. After he quit most of the molds ended up at either Boyd's or Mosser's since they are all in Cambridge. Harold used two marks, a B in a triangle or just the single B. If you use the URL below & scroll down to the Guernsey Rabbit Covered Dish
& Guernsey Slag Bird Compote you will see some of the old mold production he did. Ken
