Title: Ravenhead "Red Top" Kilner Jar seals
Post by: Bernard C on September 15, 2011, 03:39:25 AM
You may recall from here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,16977.0.html) that we're into preserving and bottling.   At the peak of this season of mists and mellow fruitfulness we're now running low on Ravenhead "Red Top" Kilner Jar seals, and will only have enough for this year's damsons, greengages and plums if we keep to the larger size of jar and re-use old seals.

I've tried our local shops, who apparently haven't had any for years, and the Internet, where the seals seem to be only available at a price that makes bottling fruit uneconomic, which is crazy.   :spls:

Help please!!!

Spilling over the edges of the shelves in supermarkets and diy shops here... lots of different sizes. French are very into conserving.

Bernard, sorry no help but we have pretty much given up on using the Kilner jars now. They are just so expensive, Unfortunitly there is nothing to rival them.
We pickle more than anything, so we are lucky enough to have a fish and chip shop nearby that sell their giant pickle jars once empty, and because of the size they work out really cheap.
We didnt really do much this year unfortunitly, jon pickled some onions and eggs, and i made a batch of elderberry and plum jam but that was about it.
My parents have just bought a fruit dryer, as they are having the same problems with the cost of jars, seals and so on.
Do you have a cutlacks store as they often have the Kilner jars and seals, next time I go to one i will have a look and see if they have them and check the price out for you.

presume you have investigated the possibilities of an alternative material from which you might make your own i.e. cutting out circles.     There must surely be some slightly resilient plastic/synthetic whatever that could be used.           In view of Frank's comments, I assume he is sending you a goodly supply - after all, we buy their letters.  ;)

I will check out local prices if you let me know sizes next time I am in a supermarket. But France is not particularly cheap for anything other than property... so no cause for excitement. On the other hand now and again some things are incredibly cheap here.
