Title: unusual boeheim weight
Post by: RAY on September 19, 2011, 04:17:01 PM
i've not sen one of these types before but i'm sure it's boeheim but not got a clue about the canes, the glass itself is very dark more like a purple colour and one of the hardest weights i've had to photo, the design is on a bed of crushed coloured glass with no signs of any canes fragments, the 2nd top layer has crushed glass around the outside with a canes clustered in the center with 5 air bubbles going down to the 1st layer, the base might have been polished at one time but over the years it has gathed loads of scratches and so has the body of the weight, would it be worth it getting it professionally polished ?

Hi Ray.  I think the canes are Silesian / Thuringian. These usually turn up in concentric millefiori weights, usually with a spatter cushion.  The bases are usually flat, and rather matt - so yours might be original. I think 'Bohemian' is okay as general descriptive term.  The glass is often dark, or tinged purple.   A word of caution regarding polishing (from bitter experience...): the glass these are made of is very hard, and even the smallest chips often have an invisible crack under them (invisible until you start polishing, that is). And obvious bruises run deep into the weight. So you can end up having to remove quite a bit more glass than you expected - so the weight ends up noticeably smaller.
