Title: Blue opaline lamp base origin
Post by: uphoosier on September 26, 2011, 01:29:54 PM
This blue opaline glass base is 18" tall.  The center panel is textured, and the classical warriors are brass layed on the glass, not painted.   There is the remnant of a lable, but all I can make out is " Made In G or C".  Does this look familiar to anyone?  My best guess is Czechoslovakian 1950s or 60s.  Thanks for taking a look.
Ken

Harrach might be a possibility, see this link:

have you checked the labels section on the GMB ?  -  might be worth a look. :)

The link to the Harrach Greek series is great, but the warriors on the lamp are not painted or transfers, but are brass inlaid in the glass.  Only 1/8 or so of the lable is still in place, so matching to one in the library wasn't possible.

I did take the lamp apart to look for marks and found none.

Thanks for the responses.

Are you sure it's inlaid? That would be cloisonné. I can't see any edges. It looks more like gilding. If it was brass I would expect to see some tarnishing. Can we have a close-up of some of the metal please

It is definitely inlaid brass.  It was tarnished before I took the Brasso to it.  With regards  to cloisonne, I think that is glass or enamel inlaid into metal.

Wow, it is brass too and the texture shows up in that photo well.

Lovely lamp. Any chance of seeing the other figures?

John

I'll post more photos tomorrow.  I need natural light for resonable pictures.

I've seen remarkably similar things from VsL.

There are 3 different figures.  Each figure is on the vase twice.  The upper and lower borders are also inlaid brass.  Ivo, thanks for the tip on Val Saint Lambert.  I've done a lot of googling but can't find anything with inlaid brass or any other metal.  Can you provide a reference?  I think this is a special bit of glass, as the list of makers capable of making it is likely pretty short.
