Good morning all.
This paperweight has been on eBay for a few days and had me puzzled.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130581753048
If there were no markings, I would have said it was part of the Wedgwood series of birds. It has a signature on the base, M. Jonasson. It is being sold as a rare Mats Jonasson signed paperweight.
The weight looks familiar, but it does not look like Mats Jonasson's signature......did he also make for Wedgwood, or have I come to the correct conclusion that this is a fake signature?

This one is marked Wedgwood!

Hmmmm.....thanks a bunch Christine, I wonder if that might be the one I had seen before? I knew I had seen one somewhere that said it was Wedgwood!
So am I correct in thinking this might be a fake M. Jonasson signature, or did he actually do work for Wedgwood as well?

I have never seen a Jonasson signature that did not run right along the edge of the base and extremely even writing. Also most seem to have a fairly complex numbering system. I reckon this is a fake signature. Also in a great many cases he simply marks as MJ as in my Pwt(see photos). Certainly I would expect him to form his name using the same sweeping capitals!

Thank you Ross, I think you have confirmed my feelings on this one.

:hi: Rosie:
Here are a couple links to my Mat Jonasson pieces and signatures posted [ Here ] (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34214.0.html) and [ Here ] (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,35402.0.html) that I have posted on the Board. I think you can see the signatures there pretty good. The one that you posted here -- looks nothing like the ones I have.
IMHO, the signature is a Fake as it does NOT even look right.....again IMHO.

From the evidence of the eBay link to the one marked "Wedgwood" and with comparisons to the quality and shapes of Mats Jonasson items easily found in quantity within the web, this item certainly seems to be a Wedgwood piece with a wrong signature applied.
Were all Wedgwood items of this type marked "Wedgwood"? (It's not an area I am familiar with.)
Has anyone notified the seller, who may be completely unaware of these points? Would be good to send them a link to this thread. :)

Wedgwood sold through the factory shop, which might or might not have been seconds, was often unmarked.

Rosie, it does not look like MJ to me at all. The shape is not like MJ and the detail is very different from their work. Even the rim and bottom looks completely off. I would have not even thought of MJ for this woodpecker. The '1960s is funny, because MJ didn't acquire Maleras until the 1980s, when it was about to go under.

this woodpecker
Actually, it's a Kingfisher Alcedo atthis :)

Got woodpeckers in my brain. :ho:

You probably all gathered that I did know this was a fake signature, just wanted a bit of backup.
I reported it to eBay in a letter, not the 'click on' tab, and got a very nice letter back from them today.....saying they were taking action to stop this sale and thanking me. His feedback is awful, and I hope the person who won it doesn't pay for it and is stopped in time by eBay!!
