Im no mdina expert but i felt a kind of anxious sickness coming over me when i saw this completed sale from 5 days ago it appears to me an early crizzle stone complete with harris text to base for what seems like a reasonable price for the holy grail as ive heard them described. Didnt want to spoil the mdina buffs night but here it is hopefully someone from here got it!!! :X: :thud:   What you reckon cheap as chips???

I think it was.
I don't care about pawmarks at all.
I prefer things without, to be honest - I reckon the price premium isn't worth paying - the glass speaks for itself, Michael Harris didn't need to put pawmarks on.

My Crizzle Stone isn't marked. It doesn't have an iridescent streak either - and if I could change one thing about it - I'd want the streak of iridesence rather than some elegant engraving on the base.

Silver chloride salts were added to glass because they change the colours of the glass with heat.

The salts themselves melt whan added to glass (thanks, AdamA!) trailing over it, and when it gets hot enough, the silver and chloride ions seperate - chlorine is a gas, it will create bubbles.
Silver makes clear glass yellow -> ochre, depending on the concentrations, and it makes blue glass, greener - this is how all the random coloured effects are achieved in Mdina.

During the additions of various casings of making a piece, silver metal ions can do various things, depending on the heat and what molecules it comes into contact with.

Sometimes, if the glass came away from the metal blowing iron slightly, gaseous silver ions escaped then condensed on the outside of the glass - giving rise to what is described as Mdina iridesence - it's a trail of silvery bluey yellowey mirror like stuff on the outside of the piece - you can see it on the ebay link.

Other times, if the outer casing is particularly thick - the silver molecules do form a "cloud" inside the casing itself - it's very bluey - almost a sort of electric blue - but quite pale.

Now your pics have appeared, I can see there is the silvery iridesence on the top of the weight in the third image.

I suspect it's not really done too much any more - it was an accident in the first place, but possibly deliberately engineered afterwards for the effect as it is so attractive - but it's a very dangerous thing to be doing - the gases are highly toxic.

I can't help wondering if this isn't what triggered Michael Harris' emphysema - which killed him.

Later pieces don't seem to have this iridescent feature

i have noticed as well it does not seem to be cased in as much clear glass as the other pieces .

In the wonderful world of collecting, nothing is set in stone unless there is original documentary evidence and even that may be superseded by newer original evidence or new discoveries.

There are 30 (plus) now known. I had been counting too, but have given up.
I leave fussing over pawmarks to Ron.  >:D
