My questions are-
How is this blue glass, which becomes an intense, electric, mid- blue, when the light hits it at the right angle, produced?

How are moulds with fine details made?

I think the owl may be an Eastern screech owl, can anyone confirm that and say what the other bird maybe [and the tree, which looks as though it could be a eucalyptus]?

Is this newish and if so where could it have been made and who produced it? [Noooo not China please!! In fact I  have enough Chinese to amount to a collection now].

This mug was made by Bryce Bros. of Pittsburgh, PA in the mid 1880s. It is the second largest in a series of four related mugs all with similar handles.

Called Bird on a Branch by collectors. Bryce called it by the very exciting name "1902 Mug".

Thank you so much Sid. So it is an Eastern Screech Owl !
And I have found a small mention of the company in 'American Glass'--James Bryce was apprenticed at the age of 10years to Bakewell, Page and Bakewell!
He went to work for Mulvaney and Ledlie in 1845. The firm became Bryce Richards and Company in 1865 and Bryce brothers in 1886.

This series of Bryce mugs has not been reproduced.

The company history according to Welker's Pressed Glass in America is:

Bryce, McKee & Co. 1850-54
Bryce, Richards & Co. 1854-65
Bryce, Walker & Co. 1865-1882
Bryce Bros. 1882-1891
Joined US Glass 1891 as Factory B
