Title: Vase offered as Galle': Legitimate?

Hello, this is for the Galle' experts out there. I saw this vase on ebay, no doubt of high quality, but is is genuine Galle'?

1. It is on crimeBay  :24:

2. Quality is not good enough.

3. Sellers description says it all, standard "I am ignorant I bought this from a wholesaler who had crates full of Gallé so he must know what he has..." type of disclaimer.

I'd been waiting and following the board policy of not commenting on a live ebay items, but it is closed now.

Its very hard to tell if a piece of Galle is right from an ebay ad. I however will agree completely with Frank that this one does not look promising, based on its pictures and description. (the base particularly looks wrong and as Frank says the quality looks poor)

To be fair though, on Ebay(dot)com there are a number of high priced and almost certainly right Galle pieces - there is even at least one on .co.uk that looks very promising (again not cheap). I suspect if you followed particular US dealers and checked their feedbacks over time you could at, a highish price, buy a great Galle from ebay(dot)com without a lot of real Galle expertise. Making it possibly a much more reliable method than buying some of the pieces of so called Galle that have been offered and sold (at high prices) in recent provincial UK auctions!

Thank you for your insight, and for at least not putting a laughing emoticon in to ridicule the question as well. At least this vase is not as hideous as some off the "Galle'" I've seen listed on eBay. To me, it is quite interesting. It does look like genuine cameo glass, at least from the seller's poor photos.

I'm really very sorry if you thought I was mocking your question.

Your question wasn't at all ridiculous - in fact it was a very sensible question

-that's an interesting piece and good Galle is very hard to identify from pictures.

Being a seller of original Galle it really hurts to see someone paying good money for -what should I call them.... 'undeserving pieces'

My apologies if I offended you, I was not laughing at the question but at the piece and the way it was presented. It is better to ask then to buy making a possibly expensive mistake. Someone somewhere sells these at reasonable prices and while they are in themselves not Gallé, still interesting glass. Tip Galle is a good one of the reproduction makers and you can get lovely pieces at affordable prices. When you take the plunge on genuine Gallé it is worth going to a reputable dealer as you will get choice, a chance to handle and knowledge all at once.
