Hi all :hi:
I had a wonderful day at the bootfair a couple of weeks ago, and amongst the pieces I bought was this lovely Amethyst Gazelle.
I am thinking it is Art Deco. Not High quality as there are bubbles in the glass and it is a molded not hot worked piece.
But it does display nicely, especially with the sun shining through it.
It is 4.5" long, 3" high and 1.5" wide.
A few chips and nibbles but then those of us who are that old would be chipped and nibbled as well??
Have a look anyway, and if anyone knows when, where or who made it, that would be the icing on the cake.
-
Does anyone think this could be French?
-
My first thought was US
-
Do you have any particular maker in mind Frank?
Thanks for replying though, I was beginning to think I was in Coventry.....
-
It's barely three days since you posted it Rosie!!
-
I Know Christine, but it was such an exciting find (for me) that I thought there would be loads of replies......sorry if I've seemed impatient. :pb:
-
Another lovely animal Rosie. I'll have a wee trawl for you. Good luck!
-
Thankyou Nancy...happy hunting! :-*
-
I was a glass animal collector and I haven't seen one like it before, nice color.
Janice
-
Thank you Janice, I am beginning to think it might be even more special than I thought! I just wish I knew a little more about it!
-

For what it's worth, I think it's absolutely entrancing .. and I don't like glass animals much (sorry Rosie). The colour is simply spiffing old girl and the shape, well, just brilliant! Of course, I can't help with I.D.
:wsh: before you tell me off for not adding anything useful. ;D

-
Thanks angel2....(feel I should call myself angel1!) I'm glad you think it spiffing, not too sure about the 'old girl' bit, but I might forgive you and not excommunicate you from the 'angels' club!
I paid £4 for it....not a lot for a piece that is clearly quite rare.
-
Rosie I think this is absolutely beautiful. I can't see why you say not high quality as it is moulded though. To my eye the design is stunning and making a mould for it cannot have been easy...can it? I've been wracking my brains to think who or what maker may have used that deep amethyst glass. It is the perfect colour for the piece.
I'll have a mooch around

Thank you m, I keep looking at art deco glass gazelles and antelopes, but only metal or porcelain ones look similar.....I have decided to give a prize of my special Ardeche Lavender to the one who finds the maker's name........ :sun:
-
Rosie, you could also try searching 'ibex' (although I drew a blank when I searched yesterday).

(no good reason for this smiley except it's cute!)
-
Good idea Nancy....I will, and I think your doggie is cute....I have 3 glass ones like that! (I don't suppose that surprises you one bit!) ;)
-
And all I have come up with is that Steuben used amethyst glass and they did a gazelle, but I've only found one in clear and the horns don't look the same :-\
Perhaps it's not a 'gazelle'
I don't suppose it has any markings on it anywhere does it? even the smallest faintest mark?
m
-
No markings, not nuffin at all!
-
Gazelle ::) it's an Ibex did you walk about with your eyes shut in Africa :wsh:
Lovely piece by the way :sun:

Hi Chris, Sabino do one called a gazelle.....I haven't seen an ibex in East Africa.....only in North Africa and the Alpine European region.

-
Rosie, could that be auctioneer's license :) or did Sabino really name it a Gazelle though?
I found a porcelain one by Royal Haeger that had a similar look, but apart from that and the Sabino, none that were as stylised.
I was wondering whether it could be Czech perhaps? but I'm sure I'm only thinking that because Moser used a deep coloured amethyst ::)
m
-
Plenty of Gazelles though :pb:
Chris :sun:
-
Oh Chris..... :kissy: I will look up glass ibex, just for you......I suppose you want to win the Lavender!! :24:

Sorry for going off topic not sure if these are related but loads of them on Mallorca and boy can they climb took these in Calla San Vincente on the North of the island woke me up one morning jumped onto the balcony to eat an apple that had been left on the Patio table knocking the lot over in the process. So after that pinched bread and fruit from the Restaurant and fed them every night.
Apparently they lived on one side of the bay and went to the other side to feed unfortunately someone decided to build an hotel in between so they had to come down through the hotel to follow the natural path they had followed for centuries.

-
Hi Christine, thanks for help, but I can't get the link to work.....can you help at all?
-
Works for me OK Rosie.
-
Got it working now, I think it was my ISP mucking about!! Don't you just love technology!?
I love that lady centrepiece, but I think the noulding on that is better than my gazelle. :usd:
-
complete longshot here but adding to the thoughts...I wonder if Gordiola or Lafiore did moulded animals? that colour is a colour I also associate with Spanish glass for some reason.
m
-
No it is not Gordiola or Lafiore - they never did pressed glass either of them.
The colour is amethyst which has been made by everyone.
The quality is not particularly outstanding - it has bubbles, striae and seams so you may safely discard top makers like Lalique and Steuben.
Maybe look in the direction of Fostoria, New Martinsville etc??
-
It's funny isn't it...the design of this piece, I think, is absolutely outstanding, yet the execution isn't the best (judging on comments made re seams, bubbles etc) . I'm not making judgements on your piece Rosie, it's stunning. I'm just pontificating on the vagueries of the art world. From my perspective I'd choose this over many, if not all, other animals I've seen, including those from the 'big named' makers.
m
-
It is a lovely design. But the hind legs are bent the wrong way poor thing. Artistic license I reckon. I hope you get an ID Rose. I have spent several hours looking at American pressed glass makers but to no avail.
-
:24: see I would never have noticed that
m
-
Don't tell Rosie Michelle, but I had to find something wrong with it cos I was getting jealous of all the attention it's getting, while my doggie is languishing away at the bottom of the page! (http://serve.mysmiley.net/ashamed/ashamed0005.gif) (http://www.blueislandsdiving.com)

For years I had one of the largest U.S. glass animal collections & sold the entire collection in 98-99 on eBay to help put my kids through college & unless its a totally obscure manufacturer or a piece we've never discovered its not U.S. I do not discount though the possibility that it might have been produced during a turn or two because of breakage removing pieces from the mold & a couple of survivors were taken home by workers. Example would be the Heisey horsehead (not to be confused with the regular Heisey horsehead) flat bookend. Only one certified pair is known in the Heisey museum & HCA still has the original factory mold. Story goes that the breakage rate was over 95% when they were popped from the mold during a few turns & it was immediately taken out of service inventory. Very recently (the past month) I picked up two glass sailboat vanity lamps that I'd never seen & it was discovered the only evidence of them was a patent line drawing of the sail portion of the boat. Its hard to imagine they were even produced because the design is so poor that they would be very easily broken by the sail falling off the base even if you simply blew on it. One of the two now resides in the American Museum of Glass in WV so yours could be an example of a piece that although was produced was never inventoried after a few turns. Information is simply not available for pieces where the mold or even the design was judged to be so defective that the mold was immediately retired from service after a few test turns, but these cases do exist.
-
Gosh, thanks for that Ohio.....this lovely little gazelle gets more and more interesting.
I admit it has bubbles, and mold lines, but so have many of my Leerdam ducks, ellies and sausage doggies, and they cost a fortune!!
So the search goes on.....I wonder if Pamela has seen anything like this???
Would a Mod be happy to put the word 'pressed' in the title just to try to attract her attention? ;D
-
No? OK, let's just hope she pops by of her own accord. :)
-
Hi Rosie. Your gazelle/ibex/ram has really taken a hold of me and I am SO frustrated that I can't find any references to it. I don't know how many hours I've spent looking. I really, really hope we find SOMETHING about it. I haven't noticed Pamela on the board recently - she must be busy!
(I've been looking for info on my pressed glass cat at the same time - maybe they were made by the same elusive company!?)
-
:ooh: Has anybody got any more information on this beautiful Gazelle......Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze? XXX
-
Rosie my dear you need to let this go and try and move on with your life ;D
Been 'bumped' that many times you need to check it for 'stress cracks'

By the way (sorry Rosie, no attribution), I don't think the legs are bent the wrong way - they look right to me although a little artistic licence-flexible. I do hope you find out who made it in the end. :X: :sun:

I feel badly for not remembering to thank whoever it was that added the'pressed' bit to the title, but I am hoping that might attract a different interest group. :X:
Everyone that has seen it says how lovely it is, and how evocative of the Art Deco period it is.
