Title: Marked Davidson glass bowls - Age? Pattern name/number? ID = #695
Post by: uncommonglass on February 28, 2006, 07:22:34 PM
Picked these up the other day and have them listed on ebay, and got to thinking a pattern name or number might help them sell.  The bowls are both marked with the Lion on the ramparts I guess it's called.

Thanks for looking!

Mary, I "think" it's the 695 pattern (dating from 1923) - I have one of the small dishes and two large plates in this pattern. Chris Stewart would be the man to confirm this for us though.

Mary
I had spotted these on ebay, and even planned on bidding on them!
Primarily to get the nice frame.  Glass is OK, but will look a lot better with a pair of vaseline glass bowls sitting on each side!

:D:shock::D
Charity shops here are chock-a-block with these bowls, big and small - I assumed they are fruit sets.
I had no idea they had any age at all.
Over what period were they produced? Are they still produced?

Where are they marked Davidson? (I've not seen any marked.)

The 695 range was one of Davidsons most popular patterns, and would have been made right up to the end in the 1970s.  Several sizes of bowl were made in my time, mainly the smallest and largest (approx 4 1/2" and 8 1/2") as fruit sets.  Also spun out into plates.  A lot supplied to the chrome plating boys for their activities.

One of my two large plates has a very very faint Davidson mark in the middle.  The pattern is also shown in Chris Stewart's book on Davidson Glass.

Thank you all for your input!  I didn't get a chance to add the pattern info before it got a bid, so I just let it ride.  The Davidson collectors knew it all along  :D

As for the mark, one website I found had the date for the mark as before 1900.  I dunno, I couldn't find any other info to corroborate that.  The mark on those little bowls was in the center inside the bowl.  Also, the bottoms were ground and polished.  In my very limited experience, that generally leads one to conclude it's old, handfinished and/or quality.  It was that and silverplate that made me pick it up and take it home.

MrVG - I thought ruby would have been nice too.  Had it been vaseline, I'm not sure I would have listed it at all!  :)

Thanks so much All for your help and your interest!

My bid did not win, but helped it along for a higher end price for you.  like i said, was only bidding to get the double frame.
