Found this little chap today, without doubt Whitefriars, sadly unable to quack, as he never got a beak
I presume Amber, although colour is a little darker in the head, and there is a clear part at the base, with a patch
of dark amber above, and i think the base is unusual, its on a completely round base with a typical Whitefriars
polished Pontil mark, ive looked and cant see another with a similar base, also plenty of age wear.
So , whats his story , a second, a prototype, a practice piece?? Or just a lucky survivor :P
Id be interested to know what the panel thinks about him
Cheers
Andy

I'm holding one in front of me now and the base on mine's more oval than yours. Also, the bubble pattern is missing on your one. If it's Whitefriars, then it perhaps it never got a beak because it had already gone wrong.
Edit: Just noticed your has clear glass at the base..think this isn't Whitefriars at all.
-
Could possibly be Kingsware?
Warmest Wishes,
John

Not Whitefriars, amber and gold were uncased think only ruby ones were clear cased the bases more egg shaped a polished pontil mark on a duck is more exception than a rule very few around.

Arctic blue version with polished pontil not often seen.
The quality is just not there with your example.

I remember that little arctic blue fella Chris ;)

Hi James, me too mate

Thanks folks,
im still convinced its Whitefriars. i think if you saw it in the flesh, you may agree.
My theory is the glass was not mixed properly, the clear glass near the base is a mistake, its not cased!
The amber colour has a dark patch above the clear, and again, just looks as if it went wrong.
The glass blower realised this early on, and didnt carry on, why it was not thrown away, or back into the pot,
im not sure.
Thats my theory and im sticking to it. 8)
I will try to get some more photos today, and i will put it in my pocket and take to Birmingham next month so
i can show it off ;)
Cheers

Sorry Andy should have said 'in my opinion' it's not Whitefriars.
Do you mind if I link it on Whitefriars.com some knowledgeable duck collectors on there may have a theory.
By the way the 'rare' polished pontil version sold for £16 :o
Chris :sun:
-
Chris , please do, i will get a nice pic of the pontil, when the sun comes around ;D
-
Hi Andy all the ex W/Fs people i know have said no , believed to be by someone trying to make a W/F lookalike . Whilst inebriated probably . :ho:
-
Thanks John, the evidence is building up against my lovely romantic theories :mus:
I will add a few more photos soon, anyway.

Here we go, a couple of the offset pontil, and the unmixed glass near the base,
the base is amber glass, and applied to the body.
:P
-
Hi Andy, linked it, a few serious collectors on the there, if we can rouse them that is.
What about an apprentice piece, a first attempt and quickly put in his pocket and taken home?
Not beyond the realms of possibility.
Chris :sun:
-
Chris, Thats one of my romantic theories ;D
Maybe an apprentice being taught, and told he can keep his first attempt
-
These have been discussed on www.whitefriars.com several times over the years. General consensus was that these were NOT made by Whitefriars, not even a rare frigger apprentice piece , and as I have seen quite a few on ebay, I would not think they are rare or friggers. I think someone thought it may have been Czech.
-
Thanks Emmi, i hoped you would find it. The ones youve seen on ebay and the ones discussed on wf.com, were they
unfinished like this one? Have you handled one? It does feel sort of whitefriarsish, id be happy to pop it in the post
to you or someone to have a look. Its not a second, not even good enough for that, it just feels that it was a left over gather of glass, that someone had a try with. The maker had given up trying , before doing anything with the head.
;D
(curious to know Patricks opinions as well)

The beakless ones are the ones which have had no attributions and thought , maybe, possibly, vaguely to have been made in Czechoslovakia.....but no evidence to confirm that. I am afraid they are deemed to be ugly ducklings! LOL!
There are ones with a similar shaped body but which have beaks, and some of these have been attributed to Kingsware.
-
A Kingsware one in this thread if it helps any....

What Ho! I posted a photo of this style of duck to Jonny King (ex Whitefriars-Kingsware) because he doesn't have a computer!!
Then had a chat with him on the phone and he said that these are NOT Whitefriars or Kingsware.
The Kingsware duck is in Chris Cooper link, Wolfie
-
Well, my bubble of romantic thoughts is gradually deflating  :hb2: :hb2:
I cant quite understand why such an ugly duckling was not thrown back in the pot, or in the bin
Andy
(did i mention its etched wf dilly duck no 1 :24: )

I just thought it a (soon to be) dead duck. :pb: :24: :24: :24: Well if it can't eat! >:D

Hi, these were not thrown away because someone made them like this, possibly an attempt to look like WF but this isn't just an odd reject . Ive seen 4-5 turning up every year either on eBay or through WF.com.
-
Maybe the maker intended to turn them into a swan - as was the story line in "the Ugly Duckling" - my favourite Little Golden Book when I was 3yo (some time back). :ha: :ha: :ha:

Thanks for all the comments  shame its nothing special, i wonder if there are that many , or if its just a few,
who cannot find a home, and keeps getting thrown out of the duck pond, back into the system, maybe i should
try euthanasia and put it out of its misery >:D  >:D
Andy

Yes, euthanasia would def. be the way to go! >:D ;D
