A friend of mine has a fish vase. It is a big one -- over 15" (37.5 cm) tall. He describes the surface as craquelle. I told him that I would post pictures here to see if anyone had an idea who may have made the fish. Thank you for any help you can give. I personally don't have a clue who may have done it.

Anita it's fabulous!! However, I can see it is textured but I'm struggling on the pictures, to see any crackle. It might be because of the opalescence and iridescence making it difficult to see if there actually is crackle to it as well as just texture. Any chance of a closer picture showing the crackle please?
Many thanks

I had the same trouble seeing the surface. The base almost looked like overshot to me, but I learned it was crackled. These are the only pictures I have and the fish is not in my possession. It is one of the best fish vases I've seen. The owner thought it might be Loetz, but I told him that it didn't look like Loetz (or Kralik or Rindskopf). The strange thing about the fish is that I can't even get a good feel of what country it may be from.

Keith has an opalescent crackle bowl by Kralik if I remember correctly.
I'll have a quick search to see if I can find it. That is what this reminded me of....just an idea though as may be totally wrong. Gosh Anita, that is THE most gorgeous piece of glass... I rarely see something I want that much, but that is one piece I would love to have!

pic of Keith's bowl is on this thread (see link, but different colourway, however Kralik did that deep orangey irdiescent glass as well - I have a large crackle piece in that colour. And they did make big pieces of glass ....obviously that is just an idea though.

oh and I have also seen a fairly large dark blue (looked iridescent but wasn't sure) crackle glass fish. I should have bid on it but didn't as it had a small chip somewhere (slightly regret that now)

I go back and forth between favoring Czech, then France, as the source for the vase. This form didn't become popular in Italy until about 1940, but others could have made it before then. The Kralik craquelle looks very similar to what I can tell about the texture of the glass. It is so hard to see in the fish pictures.

I'd just been looking up French glass as well...weird. I think it was the shape of the foot that made me think possibly French - but that was just a hunch. btw I'm just curious is the foot/base hollow do you know?

It looks like a hollow mound to me.

Amazing piece, can't say I've ever seen anything like it,not really like my bowl, reminds me of Stingray, not much use that is ::) ::)

Interesting. Obviously mould blown and then crackled, irridised and tail added. Looks too unsubtle to be French. My vote would be Czech and possibly Kralik.

Anita I came across this link, unfortunately I've no idea what the site is, however the owner says he thinks his fish is a Loetz Cracquelle. I can't confirm that of course, but the size given is 14 " so I think it may not be the same fish as the one you posted to. So I thought I'd link it in case, to show there are at least 2 of these large fish out there :)

However, something has occurred to me, that base...if it is hollow, reminds me very much of Archimede Seguso large sculptures which have that kind of base/foot and I haven't seen any Czech pieces with that foot, although that's not saying much ::)

I wonder if it is the same fish. The person who wrote me thought it might be a Loetz craquelle. The measurements he sent could have been subjective. Some of these odd shaped pieces depend on how the measurements are taken. I prefer to measure things completely vertical, but noticed that some people put a little horizontal into their vertical, making things a bit larger. $5200! If I wasn't sure what something was, I would go for a bit less.

:thud: I don't suppose this is Loetz Astglas is it?
I've been wracking my brains to think what it reminds me of, and that is what.

It does look similar from what I can see. The fish appears to me to have a bit of opaline in it. I put the fish on a group that had a Loetz expert on it, but he didn't comment on it. Loetz did do a few figurals, but I haven't seen this one. It would be nice if it was Loetz. We would have a look at an unusual piece.

Opalescent hue rather than opaline perhaps?, or perhaps it is just the iridescence showing like that as in the first link on my last post. On the second link there are a couple of pieces with clear iridescent applications as well. Well....I've convinced myself anyway ;D
