Title: Bowl with strange trees and wading birds - who made it

This large bowl has strange trees that look like giant ferns from some prehistoric age.  Various flamingos, cranes and wading birds are etched in between the trees.  It is a heavy bowl.  It is 9" (22.9cm) at the top, 5" (12.7cm) at the base and 6" (15.2cm) tall.  Unsigned.  Has anyone seen anything like this bowl?  Does anyone have any information on maker or age?

Looks like some ostriches as well.  The trees look like a palm tree of some sort.  An off the cuff suggestion - it may be to do with Madagascar - that is a queer place for plants and animals.

I don't think you'd find an ostrich in Madagascar.  Interesting piece, but I haven't a clue.
