Title: Help! Murano? Orange Duck With Base with dimples on the top? Base Glows In UVA
Post by: Scarvo on November 03, 2011, 10:47:16 PM
Hi there, I have posted previously regarding a possible Murano Bull.

Please see photographs attached of possibly a Murano Duck - it's beautiful in orange and red.  My friend brought a light around I think it's called UVA - a purple one, ultraviolet - I wanted to try it on the Bull but put it on this piece of glass as well, it turned the base green!

I was wondering if this is Murano too?  Many thanks to the people who have written me and described the glass the bull is made from, the glass I believe is a different type of glass but somebody else who wrote back on the previous post said that it depends upon the colour of the green the glass goes as to what type of glass it is.

I would like to know if anybody has any idea, who perhaps made this duck and which country it comes from?  I shall ask my friend back for the light tomorrow to take some pictures in the dark and show you the shade of green it goes.

Thankyou for reading this post.

Paula

It's probably a Murano duck but you are very unlikely to find out who made it. It is NOT uranium glass. The clear glass contains something called manganese, which is used to remove traces of green caused by iron in the sand used to make the glass. Glass made from iron-containing sand is the same colour as the old-fashioned coke bottles. Such sand is cheap but needs help to produce colourless glass. Manganese in glass will give a dull yellowish green glow under a UV light.
