I have got this weight.
Does anybody know more about it?
Regards
Helene
Mod: Helene has povided detailed photos of this weight later in the thread.

Because of the setup, I would have to say Vasart and not Strathearn.......
Pretty good weight!
-
Hi all
Never say never........... but I have never seen a Vasart with this tidy a set up nor with this
sort of marks on the base from where it was parted off. Vasarts normally have either the
word Vasart etched in script or more usually have a rough ground pontil. The way this one
has been parted off with loads of small scratch marks probably from the point of a knife or
similar being used towards the iron is more usually associated with Paul Ysart
So my money would be on Paul Ysart but I await to be shot down in flames by KevH !!
Best regards
Derek
-
Could it be a Salvadore Ysart weight?
-
My money's on Derek until he's shot down!! The outer alternate complex canes say Paul Ysart to me.

Hi everybody,
What an interesting and nice weight!! Also a bit of a conundrum!! I agree with Derek that the pontil scar and surrounding stress marks are similar to those on Paul Ysart's weight. I do not think that this is a weight by him, though. The canes do not seem right to me and there are a lot of bubbles near the canes (see the first picture...), something that I do not associate Paul Ysart with. I would say that this a Salvador Ysart weight (or may be a very good Ysart Bros.).
I am dying to know what KevinH will say.

Not a Paul Ysart weight.
I have so far seen none of those canes in Paul Ysart weights. The outer canes are very neat but then so were many of the so-called "Salvador Ysart" canes. All of the canes seem to me to be pre-1956, but it it is still possible that the weight was made later.
It is different from most others in having the standard cartwheel design set at an angle. Was that deliberate, or just a quirk of the making? Either way, it has ended up as a very tidy pattern with no elements being distorted!
Helene, I would like to see a good-sized, close-up photo of the central portion of the base showing the "cutting in" marks in some detail.
-
Hi all
If the "slant" was just in the making then I would expect there to be some
evidence of distortion in the outer garland of canes and there is none.
Also if you look at the direction of the slant it would mean that the slant
was put in when the iron was being rolled towards the maker - unusual.
So for my money this has to be a deliberate slanted setup.
best regards
Derek

"Also if you look at the direction of the slant it would mean that the slant

Unless he was a left handed gaffer?

That is an excellent weight!!!!! Just to confuse everyone PY aquired these canes from his fathers stock and made this weight so that in later years we could get a headache trying to work it out.
Seriously speaking though, forgetting the cane manufacturer, its a typical PY precision pick up.
Regards Roger.

Please excuse me all, but my English is not very well and all what you are saying on the board drives me crazy!
I have no UV!
I have just bought this weight in Germany and it is on the way to me by shipping and has not arrived till now.
I am buying weights by intuition.
More like : in an conservative way : looking of structures and how like the item looks like.
Of course, when I saw the weight, my first intention was: this weight is YSART!
But is it:
Salvadore
Vasart
Paul?
For me it would be very, very interesting, how you vote here on the board what it could be:
30% Salvadore ?
40% Vasart ?
30% Paul?
Please let me know!
Kind regards.

Just for a colour test, because many different people see colours differently, what colour is on the outside of the centre ring of canes? This is a serious question. Regards Roger.

Thank you, its a good start, my wife says blue as you but I see a blue/purple. Getting back to the weight in question I believe there were many tiny bubbles in PYs earlier(pre-war) weights although this looks a very clear glass denoting a later time. But of course I am still of the opinion it was made by PY, unless of course anyone can show me an Ysart bros that is as well made.
Helene, is there a tint to the glass or not? Regards Roger.

They are all better than the average Ysart Brothers weight - and although some of those above might actually have been made in the 1930s, the evidence I have so far supports an Ysart Brothers period.
One other point is that Helene's weight could possibly be Vasart Ltd - but using earlier canes! But I seriously doubt a PY attribution.
-
Thanks Kevin, I thought you would come up with the necessary info and I have looked at them all, yep they're pretty good aren't they---------I concede. :thud: As I mentioned before this is a discussion board so that was definetely a discussion from which I and others have learnt more about the subject.
Getting back to the weight in question it looks very clear glass unless its the lighting effect. Would you say there are Salvador weights with a good clarity of glass. I don't have any Salvador weights so I couldn't say.
-
Yes, several of the items I have which I considser to be by Salvador Ysart, have good glass; i.e. not too tinted and with very few stray bubbles and often free of striations. In fact, many of the the regular Vasart bottles (with the striped necks and well section) also have good quality glass and workmanship.
However, the daily production weights from the Ysart Brothers period can vary greatly in quality, even many of those probably made by Salvador - but they were simply bread & butter gift items, not intended to be "art glass" pieces.
-
Here are some new pictures!
-
And this.
-
The profile view goes a long way to confirm a Salvador made weight. The best I have seen. Roger.
-
Hi Roger!
OK: you find the item as very well.
But what do you think is it worth on EBAY or so on?
I have no idea! ?

Hi Helene, as the board is not supposed to be for valuations I shouldn't really say but------ I dont suppose anyone would give their right arm for it so I guess it would have to be at least a shaven head, perhaps a bit more on a good day. Regards Roger the mad rabbit.
-
All right!
A shaven head on every day!
That would be enough for me just.
