Title: Spherical ashtray with cut-out circles and radiating lines - cobalt blue
Post by: wolkenreb on November 09, 2011, 03:58:23 PM: I've been hoping to buy one of these for a while and finally got this one. But I was surprised by the radiating lines at the back - all of the other ones I've seen have only had the circles.

I've checked the board and found a thread regarding one of the afore-mentioned (circles only) looking for an ID. I can't find that thread now but I'm pretty sure there that ID remained unknown.

I just wondered if someone out there may be able to point me in the right direction with this one? It is roughly 3" wide.

Post by: glassobsessed on November 09, 2011, 06:56:24 PM: I have seen them in red and blue but that is the first with a fan tail. Vases in a similar style with cut circles also crop up but so far I think the maker remains a mystery.

I keep looking for a labeled example...

Funny how such an iconic looking design, such as these ashtrays are, should be a mystery. Well, here's hoping for an ID one of these days. :X:

I did a bit of a search to see if I could find anything like this by Whitefriars, but no luck. I reckon it would have been ID'd by someone on the GMB if it was Whitefriars. But who knows? (I think I'll let this one go BTW - 2 is just greedy!)

Saw a bowl today same blue colour and cutting, label marked J G Durand Cristal France.

Crossed wires Chris? I thought you meant that when you were out and about you chanced to spy something similar to the ashtray design - or were you just passing by your cabinet? :huh:

Post by: wolkenreb on February 10, 2012, 03:46:24 PM: I turned out to be greedy after all. I now have 3 of this type of ashtray - the 2 most recent ones have circles only (no fantail). I hadn't realised that they were made in different sizes too. Very pleased! :girlcheer:
