Title: Any ideas on the origins of this sinuous sculpture please?
Post by: bfg on November 18, 2011, 02:03:27 PM
Hello again, finally plucked up the courage for another post! I wondered if anyone recognised this please. I have been hunting around on t'internet but have found nothing matching...a few similarities to other items but not been able to pin it down.

There is no aventurine running through it, you may not be able to see that from the photos, it has a front and back and is cased in clear glass. The stand it is attached to is crystal with bevelled edges.

Stands 10 & 1/4 inches (26cm) tall and is 4 & 1/4 inches (11cm) wide  and weighs 23.8 oz (676g)

any pointers gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

B

the funeral parlour around the corner has several of these in his shop window - alongside solar powered votives and teddy bear monuments.

No not at all - but it is true, I see these several times per week when I come by his window and I find them slightly misplaced as funeral monuments. So I am interested to find out whodunnit - but I won't walk into the shop to ask them....

I see loads of these on eBay and at bootfairs.  I'm afraid they are mostly Chinese.....although there are some genuine artist crafted pieces about as well.....but I couldn't tell you the diference.
I nearly bought one thinking it was a piece of Hokitika glass a Koru,  then realised it wasn't. :usd:

Sorry 'Big Friendly Giant' if this has disappointed you.  :kissy:

There are lots on this site:
http://www.oempromo.com/product/Sculptures/A/Art-Glass-Sculpture---Brown--Yellow-Curlicue-100757.htm

And are often bought to give as trophies.

Also seen often in Wilkinsons Home & Garden stores and TKMaxx, marked Made in China.

I found some similar to this that were made by Zibo Luxe in China. They do a lot of the Murano style glass there in the Shandong province. There is a bit about them on the alibaba page http://zbluxeglass.en.alibaba.com/.

I am sure they would be cheaper anywhere else but eBay ;-)

Just a thought... I seem to remember a Murano version being shown off here a longggg time ago that had been bought at the glassworks.

The one's I saw in Wilkies were about £8 I think... and yes, Frank, wasn't it Leni who bought a Murano one and brought it back?

The sculptures were popular in Murano. A lot of people made them. I think bfg's is Chinese, though. The different colors of the stripes on different sides remind me of some of the other things made in China.

I actually appreciate the Chinese glass. Few people can afford the glass coming out of Venice. The glass made in China gives a less expensive alternative, and is often very good for house decor. The trouble comes when it is represented to be the thing that it imitates. From what I've gathered, less time is spent on the Chinese "Murano" pieces, so they can be turned out in large numbers. I've noticed with some of the filigrana pieces that the workmanship is clumsy looking, with things not lining up right. bfg's sculpture looks pretty good.

This is the type I thought was an authentic Koru,  but I am not certain it is..... possibly a Chinese one again,  but not sure.

?????

Hi there:
I have NO idea if it was Made in China, or where -- I just know I have seen them in my Google travels here.

As here is one I found: http://www.glassofvenice.com/murano-glass-knot-sculpture-blue-p-1610.html?affiliate_banner_id=1&ref=303 (http://www.glassofvenice.com/murano-glass-knot-sculpture-blue-p-1610.html?affiliate_banner_id=1&ref=303)

So could also be just a Newer Murano Souvenir piece ???  but not sure at all.  Just though I would add the link...

????

Thank you all for your replies, lots of links to browse through

I am not at all disappointed that it might be Chinese it is still a lovely piece of glass that I find myself cuddling as I walk past and as I did come here to find its origins this has been a successful mission   :hiclp:

I suppose I ought to visit TKMaxx et al but I hate shopping with a vengeance (unless its an auction or garage sale etc) - not a typical girlie me

I have a couple of other bits to put on the board for assessment....probably turn out to be from woollies lol :pb:

I quite like these, to be honest, and one may find its way home with me when I decide where it might live...  difficult in a house which is over-full with glass! :)

Here's one on eBay that reminds me of yours -- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170728174416
I would have thought this one was Chinese, too, so what do I know?  :ha: Yours may also be Murano glass.
