Title: Is this a Tiffin optic rose bowl in "desert red"?
Post by: dorian_graye on November 19, 2011, 04:38:23 PM
I think there are one or two Tiffin enthusiasts in the forum.  I recently purchased the book "Tiffin Modern" and thought this might be a piece in their desert red color.  I hope someone might be able to confirm this.  Thank you.

I don't believe this is Tiffin. Tiffin did not have a Desert Red only a Desert Rose which is pink plus the shape, base treatment & those slanted windows do not appear in any Tiffin Modern form.

Well, that does not appear to be true.  In the book there is a color page and "desert red" appears on those pages. The color was in production from 1965-1970 and it looks very much like the color of this vase; a deep amber.  There are examples (not many) of this color and similar technique.

The book is Tiffin Modern: Mid Century Art Glass by Ruth Hemminger, Ed Goshe, and Leslie Pina.

The pictures I've posted are a bit deceiving.  The sides of the vase aren't slanted or paneled.  The interior has very thick veins of glass that give that appearance.

My bad. I have that & five more Tiffin references & did find a desert red (which is their deep amber), however & maybe its my monitor but I'm seeing what appear to be  5 star shaped mold lines on the base with what appears to be an indented polished pontil & those optic appearing "veins" as you call them, well all those are throwing me off since they are not found on any Tiffin Modern pieces that conform to the Optics Guide found on page 11 of the same reference nor are they found in Kelly O'Kanes refererence of Modern line catalogs. Janice is also a Tiffin vet so wait to see what she thinks as in over 30 years I've not seen this particular (exact) form or the features that appear in the photos, but maybe its just the photos & the angles.  You don't give any size, but my impression is that its a small/medium rose bowl?

Perhaps it's more like "air trap" than "optic rib".  The veins I mentioned are hollow.

Looking at "Tiffin Glassmasters, the Modern Years" by Kelly O'Kane it does in fact look like a rolled flip vase with bubble optic. These were made in 1967  with a new design element, the elongated controlled bubble. Very pretty!!

Janice by chance do you mean the 14 Rose bowl one in Kelly's Pg. 187 & 217 instead of the flip vase? I can only say that I've never seen one of these elongated bubble rose bowls in person...have you? It does resemble the shape, but tough to match up in the book  although I assume because the elongated bubbles would vary with hand manipulation. I'm now wondering if Dorian hasn't found a piece that would be considered in the scarce category as I think I'd remember if I even saw one one of these elongated 14s (especially in this color since amber Modern is pretty unusual to begin with) even at the Spring/Fall show that I've attended on & off for years. Ed does show the 500 rose bowl in Desert Red on Pg. 210, but its just the straight optic. I'll ask Ed when I run into him at Scotts on Friday. Ken

Duh, yes, the rose bowl...my excuse...really bad cold! No, I've never seen one that I know of but I did meet Kelly O'Kane years ago at a show and one might have been there and I forgot.

I will have to see if I can get my hands on the Kelly O'Kane book.  Thank you both for your input. It is genuinely appreciated.

Ken, we're very close to the same age so I have a double whamy working against me. I thought the cold was getting better but it doesn't want to surrender yet so I'll lurk and try not to make any blunders!!
