Title: tile
Post by: Ivo on November 28, 2011, 03:41:55 PM
Here is a dark brown tile 15x15 cm = 6x6".  There is a groove on three parts of the edge . Number 4 is smooth. Any suggestions as to what on earth it may be?

looking at the rim area, could it actually be a plinth for a vase?

Thank you for that suggestion but then the decoorat ion makes little sense. I found 5 of these and bought 1 to id - so a nest of plinths seems unlikely.

For a coaster it is huge and heavy. And I think the grooves around it make it slot into something - perhaps a wire frame of sorts, to make a panel. Or something architectural. I just cannot see how.

Do all 5 have the same grooving (pic and shape/size of groove) the size is a standard tile size. Architectural seems likely, motif does not suggest very old. Perhaps face of a planter or window box, which would only need 3 grooves. What is the back like? Cast or moulded.

no idea but to me it looks like they should slot into or  slide down into a frame or holder with the side that isn't grooved being uppermost.  Franks window box sounds a possible.  Are they translucent at all? They look quite opaque (just wondering about some sort of lighting perhaps ).

They are very dark brown - I would say this is beerbottle brown and a candle behind would not cheer you up.  As far as I remember the grooves are not all in the same direction to the design = some are horizntal, some vertical and some sideways L/R.

so they might surround 'something' in the middle, some tiles being slotted sideways l-r or r-l,  some being slotted down from the top some from the bottom up.  Some firescreen type thing?

Really need detail on all the grooves per tile. Are the grooves cut, squared bottom etc?

I'm being particularly dense here  ::) I assumed when you said 'grooves' you meant the edges of the tiles as we could see them i.e. moulded 'soft' grooves, I just assumed the top edge on your pic was flat as I could see it - do you mean there is one long cut in groove/slot all down the edges of each tile (apart from edge 4)?  Please could we see a pic if so?  Thanks

Could this possibly be a thought?

Scroll down to the bottom of the first page and click on next, then scroll half way down again,  there is a tile edged mirror on the RHS.

Glass Tile for decoration in the loo, or kitchen -- or something -- because it looks like it has to butt up to another since it has a groove in it????

???  Other than that I have no idea ??

So moulded groove, meaning not straight forwards production. I would assume that whatever it was a part of was damaged and what you got was the salvageable tiles. Knowing the groove structure of each piece might give a better clue to purpose. As none have for sided grooves that would imply edging and any corner tiles would need only two grooves on adjacent edges.
