Dear Sir or Madam.
I'm doing some research for my grandmother on a piece of glass with an odd mark.
Its a shallow 'sweet meat' dish, around 20cm diameter and 6cm deep. The Bowl part is on a stem about 10 cm long. its a really chunky thing, not small and dainty at all. And its Heavy!!
Gran thinks its probably 17th century.
The interesting part is the mark in the glass. And I do mean IN the glass. its not a surface thing, it does look to be within the walls, this may be an illusion. ther is no surface texture, its completely smooth. She has owned this bowl 10 or more years and noticed the mark only a few months ago, very faint. not coloured. I'm finding this hard to describe. The glass has gone pearly over time, but the mark is crystal clear glass. She's tried washing it off but to no success. Its so faint she's put a bit of tape on it so we can find it again. it appears to depict a sitting animal. Its not a drawing or skketch, its a collection of lines that loosely look like they may be an animal lying down. Its almost as if its been done with a very fine paint brush an had taken no more than 5 seconds to produce. when i say fine, the line are no more than 3mm wide. Its just an outline, no interiour or detail.
I know nothing about anything to do with glass but gran has been collecting 17th an 18th century glass all her life. I've done my best to describe what i saw.
Is this common practice, to mark the glass like this, gran thinks its unusual.
Does the symbolisation of an animal symbolise anything, a maker, or a date?
Any info or advice on how to proceed would be gratefully recived

Sounds curious, love to see a picture, you may struggle to get a shot of the odd mark, maybe its just a flaw that
coincidentally looks like an animal?
Maybe you have a reputable auction house near you, they are usually happy to give you a free identification and
possible value.
Try out your photographic skills.

Thanks for the responce.
I dont know when I'll see Gran next but when I do I'll try to get a photo.
Mum things its nothing, just some sort of scratch but there's no surface flaw, its totally smooth which strikes me as odd.
I think its almost certainly deliberate. The lines and the way the strokes have been made just look purposefull.
I'll get a pic but it may take a while.

- the top
- the side
- the base
- close-up of "the mark"
