This had been a very good year for me in many ways, but today I want to show you my latest piece of glass which I received yesterday.
It is an M. Janku signed bird....I think it is an egret but happy to be corrected.
It is neodymium glass at the head, cascading down to rosy pink at the foot.
In perfect condition, but with age related wear to the base and best of all, it has the M. Janku signature.
Any help with dating would always be appreciated.
Rosie. :)

Rosie, what a beautiful bird! (And I would think egret as well)
Here is a link (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue197011?authkey=Gv1sRgCLCckNyK7eTpBg#5445157759743240258) to Czech Glass Revue from 1970 on Jindrich's site, where similar egrets are shown -- but designed by Miloslav Klinger :wsh:
Michael
-
I'd go with a grebe
-
I can't help with the bird (though I think I'd call it an egret if I knew what an egret was), but I do think it's a wonderful piece! Rosie, you forgot to mention how big it is... ;)
I'd say c.1960.
-
Hi again.....sorry I forgot to mention the height.....11.25" , and was beautifully and carefully packed by the seller.
Wow Anik, 1960, that makes it Vintage!!!!!!
Thank you for the link Michael, I'm off to have a look.
Rosie.
-
I'd have said shag or cormorant........but those don't sound romantic or artistic...........but not a grebe. How can anyone not know what an egret is ;)
-
That's because I'm a city girl. If it ain't a pigeon, then it's a 'bird'. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/rolleye/rolleye0009.gif) (http://www.celebrityfashionarchive.com)
Rosie, almost 29cm tall is huge... what a presence it must have! You're a lucky lady.
-
Paul i am so glad you said it as i was thinking it but didnt want a slap from old MR Boring . :-X
-
oh, it's tempting, but I daren't.................and a warm welcome to the GMB to this new member whose name I was not accustomed to seeing :24: :24:
-
It is now confirmed as a Cormorant, thanks to my lovely friend Anik, :) (who sent me this link to one that Della has)
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,18268.0.html
(and a good guess from Paul S. ;) )
So we can forget egrets, grebes, shags :o and pigeons, :usd: and concentrate on the sheer size and beauty of a lovely piece of glass. :sun:
And, last night I won a signed hedgehog, so if any of you lot were bidding against me.........na nana na na!! :wsh:
-
quote from Rosie .............."(and a good guess from Paul S. Wink )". No guess - it's just that I'm good with birds with a lot of neck ;) Like all these artistic pieces, it's a very stylized production - in reality the cormorant's beak terminates in a hook - but then who wants reality in art. :)
-
I thought cormorants were shags?
-
The common cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag
The reason you will see no doubt
It is to keep the lightning out
But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears may come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.
-
Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs Mother - I'd have laid money on that being Lear, and instead it's Isherwood - wonderful and thanks very much Nancy, it is just the thing to
get me going on a drab Sunday morning. I am a fan of his, but really only for the Berlin stories (disappointed to find out he was batting for the same side).
Just to make life difficult, there are, apparently, two separate species within the cormorant family - one called a cormorant, and the other a shag - and it seems they are not easy to differentiate (unless I suppose you are a shag or cormorant ;))
But think they have perhaps interchangeable names in other parts of the globe. Isn't Kevin our resident ornithologist?
-
quote from Cathy..............."I thought cormorants were shags?"..........and this is where I probably get kicked out........
so Cathy, you mean I've had it wrong all these years, and what I should have been saying at bedtime was 'd'you fancy a cormorant' :wsh:
-
You skate on thin ice this morning Paul.......bearing in mind 'Beavers' were not allowed.......be afraid, be very afraid!!
Anyway, I've got a signed hedgehog now as well.....and if anyone mentions the prick(le)s, there will be a riot!
I'm off to see if there is anything interesting in the Café :wsh:
-
Rosie and Paul thats two of you i have to complain about now , old MR Boring will be busy
-

Vladislav Urban for Hermanova ? information gleaned from Astrid's Picasa album thanks :sun:
Rosie love the Shag and the Hedgehogs none too shabby either nice finds.
Chris :sun:
-
Thanks Chris :kissy: The Cormorant was a bargain, but I think I paid all the money for the hedgehog....but with the two Foxes, I am now getting a nice collection....although I am still sulking over missing the turquoise Ram.
Oh yes, and I like the vase as well...........is it neodymium?
-
Looks like it should be but no it's not, sorry for the photo hijack feeling guilty for missing your Birthday Anik
Chris :sun:
-
Rosie, the hedgehog is lovely. You know I love ZBS critters!
Chris, your Urban vase is wonderful! I don't have the 20048 in my collection yet, but one day...
Lucky fellow. Thank you for sharing. :kissy:
-
I was outbid on one of these hedgehogs (identical), the other week and was so grumpy about it, but then when this one came up so soon afterwards, I was determined, and although it wasn't cheap, I paid less than the other person did for theirs, so my Guardian Angel was definately there for me. :sun:
Rosie. :)
-
also quite rare in the wild now, I understand - major demise over the past 3 - 4 years - and the only two I've seen in recent years have both been dead on the road. Very sad.
-
Not in my suburban garden, we had about 5/6 different ones visiting over the autumn. (K set up a pig-cam with a feed to a monitor and to his computer so we could see and record them.)
-
You are so lucky Christine, like Paul, the only ones I ever see now are dead ones on the side of the road with badgers, squirrels and pheasants......it makes me so sad.
Maybe that's why I collect glass ones, at least I can know they are safe here with me.
-
yes, apologies, I should have added that my comments were referring to the south east of the U.K. only. I'm glad, and relieved to hear that they are prospering in other areas - they are endearing, and seem quintessentially English - although I'm sure they are distributed world-wide.
-
I was sooooooooooo pleased to have won a very large ZBS animal (not sure if it's supposed to represent a bird or a mammal)... I've been waiting for days and days for it to arrive from the Czech Republic. Today, it finally did.
Sadly, and stupidly, I placed the poor creature while it was still in bubble wrap face down on the table, breaking its nose / beak. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/sad/sad0068.gif) (http://www.blueislandsdiving.com)
My husband said he'd fix it for me. This time, not with a blowtorch, but with some superglue and a lot of TLC.
-
Oh Anik, that is so sad....poor little 'whatever-is' you must be heart broken!
I've started opening my glass over a soft surface to hopefully prevent that from happening, but the trouble is, when you have waited a long time for something to arrive, you are just desperate to open and see it, so it can so easily happen.
Let's hope the repair makes it look good as new for you, jolly glad your not letting your OH use the blow torch this time! :X:
-
Paul: That depends how much of a twitcher you are, of course. It would have worked for my father-in-law.
-
Whatever it is its gorgeous!! Jealous much! The original bird of Rosie's I mean...
-
So pleased you like my CORMORANT Trudy......I refuse to call it a shag, just in case any objections are raised.
He is beautiful, I love it and am looking for more of M Janku's work.
Rosie. :)
-
Just to link to these earlier discussions related to Janku birds etc..

Thanks PX, I had seen them and of course that is how I knew mine was a cormorant.....I still keep looking at it and thinking 'Could I have been that lucky?'
So I now have quite a collection, but I still wanted the Ram.....and I'm still sulking.....
-
You were lucky Rosie i had it on watch , but after a good bottle of Claret fell asleep and missed it as i quite often do , i am sure your bid would have won it Rosie you country folk have lots of pocket money . ;) ;D HAPPY NEW YEAR . MATRON :srn:
