Title: Hoffman or not- no butterfly? Intaglio ashtray, cantering horse & cart
Post by: flying free on December 16, 2011, 12:37:40 AM
I can't match the picture having been through all the catalogue pics on presglas pavilion 1927, and neither can I match the shape.
I know that not all Hoffman pieces had the butterfly, but if it isn't Hoffman does anyone know who it might be please?
It has great movement and the intaglio is beautifully done.  The piece would have been lovely new.  It is clearly either very old or very used  :)
12cm x 8.5cm
Thank you for any thoughts

p.s. I can't find it in the Desna catalogue - I think this may be an older piece though.  It doesn't match the Hoffman Golfer ashtray I found in size although the shape is very similar, but seems to have wider rims than that one.

Having worked at a Horse Racing Track for 20 years (http://www.gifanimations.com/GA/Image/ClipArt/Animals/Horses/clipart_animals_horses_011.gif) -- It is Harness Racing pic.  The cart is called a sulky.  Race horses with these carts were either Pacer, or trotters.

Maybe the terminology will better help find something....

Found this one  HERE  (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1930s-DESNA-INTAGLIO-PIN-DISH-ASHTRAY-Horse-Racing-JOCKEY-/270862260553?pt=UK_Sports_Memorabilia_ET&hash=item3f10a61949) but with a Steeple Race Horse...and called a Pin Dish.  Might yours be that too even though it does look like an Ashtray to me too.

American would seem a good bet to me, as its a far more important sport there: Steuben or Heisey maybe

thank you Rose for the very interesting information  :sun:
thanks Christine, I have never looked at any Heisey pieces - I shall do some investigating now on something new :)
I had been wondering if it could have been made by Hoffman for the American market perhaps as another option?
