Title: Iridescent vase but is it Bohemian?
Post by: glassobsessed on January 10, 2012, 02:25:19 PM
Picked this up recently but I have had no luck tracking down the maker so far. It has a light iridescence, a moulded pattern and bulbous base. The marks on the base do look a little like letters but I don't think they are, they look to me (easier when you have it in your hands) like the same (random) triangular impression repeated several times.

In terms of style it looks quite 'nouveau' to my eye. It stands 24cm tall. Any ideas?

John

I forgot to mention that it is uranium glass and glows quite brightly.

It looks like a leek. Can't help on id, though John. It's uraniumness might attract some folk who know more than me to comment. I hope you get an id. It's something special.

It does a bit Sue, especially the two colour thing but I don't remember seeing any Welsh leeks looking that knobbly....

An organic form mimicking nature is spot on for the art nouveau period though.

I don't know if its Bohemian or not. Rubina verde would be a good description though.

The Welsh save leeks that knobbly to take to Edinburgh for the Scotland-Wales rugby game.  :smg:
They march along Princess Street in gangs with their leeks and bottles of wine, and accost innocent red feather sellers.
I got held to ransom.
I had to EAT a whole raw leek before they all bought feathers to support the Cheshire homes. I can assure you it was JUST like this vase.
Then they made me drink half a bottle of claret to celebrate the sale of so many feathers..... all this before the match. No wonder I fell off the beer cans I was standing on when I was there. Thankfully, it was so crowded it just meant extra cuddles from  cheerful strangers.

Hells bells Sue, a whole leek raw. :spls:

Nothing quite as cheerful, good natured, expectant and possibly over optimistic as a crowd of Welsh rugby supporters before a game. ;D

I really did not describe the vase very well in my initial post - it has a ground and polished rim.
I had not considered Rubina Verde Christine. I was going to say not but after having a close look you are spot on. There is a very thin layer of mauve/pink on the inside at the top of the vase. I had not noticed it and thought the colour change was the result of the fuming only... :pb:
