However, I don't think it is Vasart can you give a pic of the base and close up of the canes please. Could be Strathearn but may be a Chic Young (Perthshire Paperweights)

Post by: KevinH on March 12, 2006, 02:03:27 AM: My first thought as I viewed the 1st image was Perthshire Paperweights. Then I wondered about Strathearn, but I always imagine Strathearn pieces to not be as "swirly" - like the swirls within the purely green section.

Reminds me somewhat of 'that green bowl with canes' that was discussed at length some time back - is it shown in your site Frank?

The canes are not easily identifiable but the colours would seem to point to PP rather than Strathearn. And the clearly seen cog cane has 20 cogs, which is not (usually?) seen in Strathearn work. Having said that, no doubt a proven Strathearn piece will crop up to show that I have it wrong!

Post by: Frank on March 12, 2006, 03:07:38 PM: Hard to be certain but it looks like it has a trace of the vague P that got pushed into the pontil button on PP pieces.

Some pieces of Strathearn are very swirly but those ones, mostly by Herbert Dreier, always have the seal. While some have been ground off to appear to be Monart, I don't think this one has.

For what it's worth I've never seen a semi-raised or raised pontil in conjunction with the tooled in/pushed in "P". Surely it would not allow for the "P" to occur, since it covers the area where it should be?
My monies on it being Perthshire Paperweights. It certainly has the attributes of those pieces that have swirls, with two colours and the canes between. There a number of known examples of these, but not in this cylinderical shape - so, maybe, there's a first :)
However, I've never studied the canes in the way that you do Kevin and they may be the conclusive evidence that is required.

Post by: Frank on March 13, 2006, 09:50:16 AM: A collector with several of the PP pieces cofirms that the pontil is typical, as is the colouring, so I think it can be safely attributed as a Chic Young piece.

Post by: Frank on March 14, 2006, 09:26:27 AM: The point to note about the impressed P is that it was presumably a shaped stamp that was just pressed onto the hot soft button. When I visited the PP showrooms I found it quite hard to recognise as a mark at all, on some pieces it was clear but still looked like a natural effect. On many it barely impressed at all and only the fact that I knew what it looked like from others, allowed me to recognise it!
