Title: Puzzling Bottle
Post by: petet63 on January 24, 2012, 11:48:27 AM
Hiya, I picked this bottle up purely because it looked strange, a whole £1 paid so not expecting anything good. As you can see on the photo it has 3 feet with a concave base. All around the bottle are dimples in a row around the middle that cant be seen in the pictures. It looks like a stopper should be in it. It has some resin stuck inside that makes it look cracked but its not. I searched but no luck. Could be a wine bottle/carafe type. I must stop picking up weird items !!

Could it be a wasp-trap?

You shove some jam and water in the bottom and hang it up somewhere. Wasps get in and drown in their greed before they can find their way out again.

That was originally my first thought but put myself off the idea because I thought they had a hole in the base, one of the first things I saw when I put in wasp trap in image search was a bottle identical to mine. I would probably hit the wasp with the bottle just to be sure ;D

I've certainly seen them with holes in the base, but I've also seen just plain old jam jars being used in orchards in France (well, back in the '60s it was just old jam jars).

I'm not certain - I was only making a suggestion - but I agree with your suggestion.
Hit the thing with the bottle - just to make sure!

I saw the same blue bottle, not the fly ;D, in a pic. It had an arrow on the side and looked to be identical. I think your right. It's a 'different' piece of glass and I like it so look out wasps if we EVER GET A SUMMER  :X: thanks for your help. Pete.
