Even though it's completely kitsch, I'm absolutely smitten by my glass snail-on-a-rock. Does anyone recognise it?
The rock is 15cm long, and the snail is 12cm long. The piece weighs 569g. The base is (surprisingly) well finished, ground and polished. There is quite a bit of wear on the underside. The snail came my way from the Czech Republic.
All comments and help appreciated... just try to swallow the feelings of jealousy welling up in your hearts. ;D

I have a piece of glass very similar to the base of this piece. I have a post about it somewhere on GMB. I will find it when I return from class this evening.

*GULP*   *GULP*
(I do "do" snails)
I've seen several unidentified small swan things which have that criss-cross marking on their bases.
-
;D And I thought no one would like it.
When my husband came home, I proudly showed him my new addition to my collection...
Me: Isn't it wonderful???
Brunon: What is it?
Me: What do you mean 'what is it?'... It's a snail on a rock. ::)
Brunon: Where?
Me: Here. (Moving the piece closer to his face).
Brunon: It looks like two blobs of glass stuck together. I don't see a snail.
:ho:
Sue, what 'criss-cross' marking are you referring to? Just in case, here are some more pictures...
-
On its "slime-producing" frilly edges.
The snail bit is Kraliky, the base..... Gozo/Mtarfa-ish.
Mtarfa did do snails. I've got a corker, but it's not like this one.
-
Ah! For some reason I thought you meant on the base... the frilly edges are great! By the way, I don't know if it's visible in any of the photos, but you can feel where the yellow and blue glass meet i.e. the snail's back is not perfectly smooth.
(Sue, is your 'corker' as slimy-looking as mine?)
-
Not around the edges - but maybe a wee bit inside...
-
GREAT, GREAT snail, Sue! (even though there is nothing slimy about it...) How big is it?
-
Not as big as yours! Sort of "ordinary paperweight" sized. Probably about 2.5 - 2.75 inches tall at the shell.
(it's upstairs and my legs aren't taking me there until bed-time).
I have another snail I suspect might be Cenedese (it's a bit slimier around the edges) but I don't have a pic to hand.
But this isn't getting your creature identified! I'm really curious about him/er (it's interchangable for snails).
-
That's a good, visible size. :)
I don't feel very confident that we'll get an ID on my snail. I suppose it does look a bit Kralik-y though I doubt they made kitsch, fabulous as it may be. I wonder what Scavo's piece looks like?
-
My piece that I think looks like the 'rock' your snail is sitting on:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,44342.msg247094.html#msg247094
This one is smaller and would fit into the palm of your hand.
Unfortunately, as mine has not been IDed all it tells us that we have 2 similar pieces that remain unidentified!
-
Well that's interesting! Our rocks are very similar indeed... Do you think it's possible that yours had a creature sitting on top of it at one time?
Thank you for finding that link for me. :hi:
-
There are no signs of anything having been on the 'rock' but it would not surprise me if these items were connected. The shape is very similar and I think it is quite an unusual shape for a paperweight. I was hoping that
I assume yours is a door stop?
Is it against the rules to cross-reference? Can we add a link to this thread from mine?
-
Feel free to cross-link Scavo :)
-
A Google image search of "Egermann paperweight" brings up several examples of the rock (without the snail). Egermann might be a lead.
-
Could be. I've sold mine now, so it's just a 'for future reference'.
