Hi Stew,
I have a piece that I think is Alum Bay. but when I checked their website the shape seems to have changed slightly and the colours are totally different to what you have (mine is the same colour as yours).
Have you checked the shape their website? http://www.alumbayglass.co.uk/browse_prod_sub.php?sid=28
I'd like to see a photo of the pontil on yours from a different angle. Mine has a pontil that looks like an inverted nipple. I think it's been cut, heated and pushed in slightly. Or perhaps cut, pushed in and heated?

Fluted bud vase, Maple, unless it is a colour they no longer use: http://www.alumbayglass.co.uk/view_product.php?pid=25

I would agree - 99.9% definitely Alum Bay. The recessed, slightly fire polished but rough broken pontil, plus that thin whispish flaky white interior and the type of colour swirl are very typical. However, if you're still in doubt then send them an email - as per John's link.........for attention of Colin Green. He has always been extremely helpful to me.

Ah, I was looking at the wrong fluted vase (25 not 28).
So, is the less bulbous, elongated shape in the official photo just the photo or have they changed shape slightly from time to time? This is the other thing I noted about mine is that on their website the items (photos) looked elongated.

thanks all
right shape the one i have the colour more yellowish. like what has been said maybe a discontinued colour. nice vase well made i think alum bay is very underrated. just looked again the ones on the web site are 250mm mine is only 113mm

I like it but got completely muddled with this and Isle of Wight Glass. The similarities between Alum Bay, Isle of Wight and Mdina are quite striking ... and I had the Michael Harris connection mixed up. Good job I went back to I.o.W and Alum Bay sites again before I but my foot in my mouth again!

I'm quite happy your bit is Alum Bay.
It's quite an early colourway, I believe, and changes to shapes and improvements in finish will have been made over the years.
It looks as if it has a heat polished broken pontil mark - a small improvement on a broken one.

thanks all for the help love this site. buying and selling glass is like putting your hand in a beehive you know your going to get stung a few times.
thanks

A nice early piece here Stew with a good view of the base finish.

a few more bottoms for comparison. The sticker is a more recent example, probably post 1997. Is that a silver chloride streak Chris, and is it that which qualifies it for being an early piece - very nice by the way. :)
-
I'm unaware of Alum Bay using silver chloride at all, but the last bit you show might have it in it, Paul. Trust you to be showing bottoms :P
I've not a clue what chris's bit is.

Hi Sue :hi: I was going to make some lewd comment, but then came over all reserved and chickened out........that last piece was one of AB's milk jugs with the large looped handle (quite a common piece down my way) - although from memory it wasn't silver chloride, but just some sort of ochre/yellow ish colour (I've had one or two of these but think I've given them all away - I can't now find one). Like you, I'm also unaware of AB using chloride, but in truth I've not exactly handled that many of their pieces, so wouldn't like to swear to it - perhaps we should ask Colin Green some time.
I was tempted to tell the joke about Oscar Wilde getting to the bottom of the page, but expect you've all heard it anyway. ;)

glad you got there in the end Chris - Obviously it came subsequent to my earth coloured piece, which Colin Green was kind enough to id for me, a part of his reply which did confirm that AB used silver chloride in the early days. I can appreciate the problems this example must have given - a colourway and shape that look Maltese - and a recessed pontil that shouts AB. Great shame you are missing a stopper. So in all probability Michael Rayner was responsible for your small pot and the larger vase of mine that Greg links. Not sure if we're supposed to apologise to Stew for sidetracking this thread, but it is all related I guess.
-
It's interesting to see the differences between earlier and later pieces. Is there a book?
Is there a link to for AB and Malta beyond the visual?
It's interesting that Whitefriars were doing something similar at the same time (68/69) and then '72 I.o.W. and AB.
It's interesting to read Mdina's official version of events with no mention of Michael Harris.
Found this informative too: http://www.glassfairs.co.uk/Articles/mdina.html and I am going off at a tangent.

no problem sidetracking Paul taking it all in the more info the better
thanks
