Now, that the auction is over: who made this weight? There is a signature cane in the base (last image) I'm not sure about.
Any comments welcome - Wolf

That's A 'W' signature cane. Francis Dyer Whittemore made that crimp rose.
-
Thank you very much, Mark - it needs a fair amount of imagination and the eye of a crimp rose expert to recognise the W :). But if you compare it with Whittemore-3 and -5 in Andy Dohan's book, it looks plausible .
-
Looks more like and upside-down "PL" for Pete Lewis.
-
I agree. It is a 'PL' signature cane. I should have looked more closely.
-
So thats a Peter Lewis weight, OK. What does anyone think of this rose irrespective of where it was made?
Roger( the rose grower).

At first glance (And no, I'm not going to simply glance this time :), this one might be dismissed as a piece of modern Chi.
I don't think it is but would benefit from side & basal views as well as what the dimensions are.
-
Well, I believe it to be modern chinese, I was only commenting on the construction of the rose itself and comparing it with other western formations of a rose. It wasn't much money and quite nicely made. Diameter 2.65 inches. Roger.
