Hi all
had this vase for a few mnths now and havent been able to identify it. First thoughts where maybe a Stennett-Willson piece but I havent found anything else like it
It stands at 25.5cm tall weighs 1.855kg. smokey brown in colour, with a zig colouring in the neck and the same colouring but wayt rather than zig zag in the body. TYpical 1970's tones of brown orange and green with a creamy white all cased in clear glass.
The base has a large polished pontil mark, with a good amount of age wear to the outer edge (what you expect for 30/40 years).
Does anybody know the maker?
many thanks
michelle

Hello Michelle :hi: - sorry, can't help you. It looks rather zany, and nothing remotely like any of the Wedgwood/SW pieces I can find in the books. Most of his are rather conservative in design and colour - tell us what line of reasoning suggested that direction of thought :) How about Maltese?
-
Hi Paul,
At first it was just a gut instinct that said Wedgwood, then I remembered I had a factory marked paperweight with similar colouring (unfortunitly hard to tell from this picture because of the lighting https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Y3wfBR6YokbnbVfoH1aqQdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink)
The shape of the base reminds me of the Angular pieces he designed http://ronaldstennettwillson.com/Vases%20Angular.html
The thickness and shape of the top reminded me of the top hats
http://ronaldstennettwillson.com/Vases%20Top%20hat.html
and last of all the studio pieces

Plus a few bits in this video

But just a hunch really Paul
cheers

Just found this, you can see the colouring of the weight I had much better in this picture. The one right at the front

Includes the orange, green and the creamy white, plus the smokey browns

thanks Michelle - see what you mean about the p/w colouring being similar - although still can't bring myself to see your vase as RSW though. Let's hope an expert drops in for a look, and I hope you get an id soon. :)
appreciate all the links.

Hi,
I vote Schott in Zwiesel although I can´t find a brown example right now... :)

ahhhh, thanks Dirk. definatly looks like it.
Im surprised as the quality is very good, and I wouldnt asociate it with what Ive seen of Zwiesel pieces before

I think their post war output - say until the 70´s is of quite some quality to be honest.
Thinking of Löffelhardt designs.... Even those ´simple´, mould-blown, single-coloured
pieces show excellent craftmanship - and they are still underestimated IMHO. :)

Michelle, here is a link (http://duesseldorf.emuseum.net/code/emuseum.asp?style=text¤trecord=21&page=search&profile=objectsde&searchdesc=zwiesel&quicksearch=zwiesel&action=quicksearch&wasaggregate=1&style=single¤trecord=24) to your vase, called "Geschenkserie 5269".
Unfortunately no designer known...
I have a massive jug from this range stored somewhere in the attic.
I agree with Dirk -- Zwiesel did make some very nice things in the 1960s and 70s.
One of my favourite pieces of glass is this Zwiesel vase (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634/German?authkey=Gv1sRgCN_GjOefn6jA7gE#5599995995162565010) :)

Its funny how these things work. Zwiesel certainly wouldnt have been a making I would have paid much attention to in the past. But I think from no on it will certainly be an area I shall be looking out for.
Thanks so much for the identification and help it is as always much apreciated
Michael I like the next one "Zwiesel, Löffelhardt". Do you only collect German glass?

Hi Michelle,
I would love to extend my collection of German glass -- there are many many pieces on my wishlist by Zwiesel, Gralglas, Hessenglas, etc.
Unfortunately not that easy to find here on the fleamarkets...
I collect mostly Czech glass (take a look at my gallery (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634?authkey=Gv1sRgCJuA8-uezuOTmAE) :))
The vase you refer to ("Zwiesel, Löffelhardt") is by the designer Dirk was talking about, Heinrich Löffelhardt -- one of the most important German designers during the 1950s and 60s.
