Title: Is this plate Czech
Post by: taylog1 on February 10, 2012, 10:47:11 PM
Just bought this plate:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160719972922&ssPageName=STRK:MEAFB:IT#ht_936wt_922

It's very heavy and looks like its been pressed into a mold.

Not my usual Scandinavian glass, but looked interesting - I'm guessing Czech but I can't identify the signature.

Any thoughts ?

Gareth

I think it is Scandinavian, and may be related to this plate:

http://jeffreysevans.auctionflex.com/showlot.ap?co=45242&weid=20852&weiid=7860625&archive=y&keyword=orrefors&lso=lotnumasc&pagenum=1&lang=En

I was going through the catalog for that auction recently, and that lot caught my eye because I'd never seen a plate like that before; also it had "Orrefors" in the title, which is one of the things I collect.

So the sellers on the auction were right, thanks very much !
Exactly the same, other than mine is signed 7170, the rest is indecipherable

On relooking I see the picture is different, cool !

Well spotted Beau.  It seems your nose for Scandinavian work is infallible Taylog!   :smg: ;)

Does the signature not read "Mats Johnasen" ??? (forgive my spelling, but I'm sure you know who I mean, Gareth!)

Whoops - should have opened the link first....  Marston Asson  :pb:

I have never heard of Marston Asson, and you could well be right Sue that this is a piece from a set by Mats Jonasson........Got a frantic day today, but will do some research in my Scandinavian links and see if I can come up with anything more positive for you tomorrow Gareth and Beaubow.
Both are beautiful pieces and I have a small but very precious collection of glass blower related pieces,  but nothing as wonderful as these.

Looking at the signature on the eBay pic, I'd say it reads Mats Jonasson as well.

That was the pic I looked at - and I tried googling the name on the link but got nowhere.

I think MJ is a likely contender after all. I shouldn't have just believed the link  :pb: :pb: - but, well, you know, it looked all official-like and confident.

Would it be worth dropping Mats an email via his website with some pics and asking him?

I have tried to access Designlasi  but the site is closed for maintenance unti 25th Feb,  so dropping a line to Mats may well be worth it.  The only other glass artist I can think of at the moment with a similar name is Willy Johannsen....but this is not really his style. I would still run with Mats Jonasson.....it looks as though it might have been a 'Workers' set.....maybe even a limited edition....I like them both,  but particularly the glassblower one.

I've dropped them an email, I'll update when I hear more

Cheers

Oh Gareth!!  Just for a moment I thought you had said you had dropped them!!  My heart flipped!
Look forward to hearing what they have to say. If they did make them, they might email you pics of other designs......I await with interest.

It's Swedish from Målarås glassworks and designed / made by  Mats Jonasson.  :)

I wrote to the Målerås glassworks to ask re this plate, and have just had a very helpful response:

The plates were designed by Mats Jonasson in 1981 and were retired from production some ten years ago.

There were four different platters; called ”Carpenters”, “Blacksmiths”, “Musicians” and “Glass-blowers”. They were part of the regular production, not limited editions.

Given this it's surprising I've not seen more about - of course now we'll be awash with them !

What a great reply, and a whole set to look for....will we be 'awash with them'?
I do hope so Gareth.....I would be so happy to have a set.....if anyone sees any, please let me know.
