Title: Something special or truly fugly?
Post by: art-of-glass on February 11, 2012, 12:11:12 AM
I was drawn to the ugliness of this vase so much, I had to buy it!

I really don't know what to make of it at all!
Snapped off pontil mark, a reasonable amount of wear around the base.
Don't know why, but something tells me that maybe it was made by a glassworks in Stourbridge area?

Measures 19.5cm tall and diameter of the main of the vase is approx 20cm.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers,
Dan

Definitely something special involving the type of glassmaking savvy  mostly found in  Murano - but could also be from France or even from Stourbridge. I wonder if jt is a cuspidor?

I think it's beautiful.  It looks like multi coloured marble.

The base of that is really similar to my Kralik vases.... Im sure someone else more knowledgeable will be able to help you out though.

Fabby, not fugly - and I was thinking that the coloured splodges over the slightly iridescent pearly background was looking awully like some Kralik discussed recently too.

haha, thanks everyone. My partner hates it...even more so that I paid £70 for it.

I should say, the "iridescent pearly" background is silver leaf ;-)

Hmm, I'll have to find that discussion about Kralik.

I'm afraid I disagree about silver leaf....

Looks like silver leaf inside the rim IMHO

:pb: Guess who didn't enlarge those pics, you're perfectly correct Christine.

.... but I did enlarge the base pic, where it looks much more pearlescent.

I was searching something completely different and bizarrely this link came up first - similar looking and technique, but no idea if it is really completely the same or the same maker.  Interesting nonetheless

I'll probably regret this but it looks different  to me,the piece in the link looks matt with protruding pieces of glass were as the other has a polished finish,I'm going to hide now :pb: :ooh:

Keith I can see what you mean in the photo that started this thread, if you look at the base picture.  But if you look at the pic of the piece side on it's cased.  So perhaps an illusion.
I suspect they come from the same factory.

I think that's to do with the shape.  I like the shape of Daniel's vase.
