get the impression matt black wasn't popular - only the third piece I've found, and believe the other two are Davidson - so thought this might be also. But, don't see it on the Davisons site, although could have missed it. Don't think Bagley did matt black, and not sure about Sowerby - might of course be from anywhere. About 5" tall, and not sure really what its purpose was - vase perhaps. Three mould seams, and slightly flattened outer foot rim. So grateful for any information, and hope someone does have an idea whose it was - thanks for looking :)

Molyneux Webb did a matt black sphynx but no idea if this would fit with their production designs.

of course they did, thanks for reminding me - I'd forgotten to look in all of the books :pb: I have books/CD's for Bagley, Sowerby, Davidson and some minor bits and pieces, but tend to overlook MW, as I don't have their data (which I believe is held in the States, or is that another factory's details?). The Sphinx was produced (originally) in the middle of the Victoria period and, I suspect, long before my piece (but that is just my personal opinion). Am sure mine doesn't show the sort of wear I'd expect from a genuine C19 piece of glass. I did look on Pamela's glaspavillon, but don't recall seeing any matt black pieces.

I've found a reference that Schweig,Muller & Co also did matt black glass. It's a reference in terms of ' I believe this was made by...' and no source, but might be worth investigating as the piece is certainly in a similar vein to yours. I also had a thought, in the recesses of my memory I'm sure I saw somewhere that William Yeoward had designed some similar pieces and used black ( but I could be making that up - I haven't done any investigating to check that thought).
