Title: Square pewter bowl - unknown
Post by: Otis Orlando on February 21, 2012, 03:03:40 AM
Hi all,  Can anyone identify this bark effect bowl.  It is rather heavy and weighs 940g.  The size is: 12.4cm 12.4cm x 5.1cm.  Only the rim of the base which is approx. 0.2cm wide meets a flat surface and tapers from the edge inwards to meet the main area of the base of the bowl.  The top rim is slightly curved on all sides and measures 1.3cm wide.  I have tried to find one similar but not having much luck.  The internal area of the bowl is polished but on very close up inspection I have noticed that the base is not flat and slightly curved around the edges, also within the centre area there are very small pin size marks scattered around the nearer to the edges.  When the bowl is held up to direct sunlight the lower part of the bowl 0.5cm in height looks clear.  Thanking you in anticipation.

It might be worth looking at Davidson as it looks like a Davidson Luna pattern to me.
I haven't checked it out though but there is an excellent Davidson online resource and they may have it there.

Not if it's cased in clear. Luna is solid colour

Hi, yes! I am enclined to agree with you flying free,  since investigating further, based upon the info. provided.  I do think it is Davidson, however, not fully convinced yet, in respect of Lustrousstone,s comments, which have shed a cloud on the identity.    The Bowl does not appear to be built of layers, which would conclude as being cased.  Between the thinkness of the glass, you can clearly see small air pockets, which will I hope, verify as not being cased.  The weight alone I would considered, as a key factor in determining whether cased or not.  ::)   Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light.   I first thought that it could be Whitefriars and having carried out some research, has y made me confused.  To add a catalyst to my confusion, there is currently on Ebay, two items that are the same and of similar  pattern design to mine, however, one states as being Whitefriars and the other Davidson.  Mmmmmmmm!

The Ebay item No's are: 280630505484 and 120838323604.   I am aware that there are some past threads that I need to look into as one similar to mine but in blue was being discussed.

Not sure I understand the previous comments; I don't see how weight can be used to determined whether a piece such as this is cased or not...?  Surely it's the overall mass of the glass that determines weight, not how many layers it is in.

Anyway, I can say definitively that this piece is not cased. I have an identical item sat on my window sill. The lighter colour at the base is just because the glass is thinner around the footrim. I'd always thought mine was Davidson Luna based on the texture, but i've yet to see a labelled example.

One thing I can say for certain - it's definitely NOT Whitefriars!  ;)

I was basing it being cased on this comment
Quote
When the bowl is held up to direct sunlight the lower part of the bowl 0.5cm in height looks clear.

and picture 4

But if it is not cased, I'm quite happy with the Davidson possibility

There is a circular one - with label - Davidson Luna on my Wannabee blog.   (see my signature for link)

Hi all, Yes! there has certainly been some mixed views on the identity of this Luna Bowl. I stand corrected on the issue of layers/weight Steve.  Having viewed Emmi's thread and previous comments, can certainly rule out Whitefriars.   So I am now left with the daunting task in finding out whether it was made by Davidson Glass, Abraham & co. or by the Brama Team Glass works. :thud:   The circular light blue Lunar Bowl shown in Emmi's thread, does have the same textured pattern design to mine, but does not seem to have the same quality.  My thoughts could of just been mislead by the picture quality of mine compared to the one viewed on the thread.    It would be interesting to know the approximate dimensions and weight of that one though.  Thanks to you all for your attribution and any further comments will be appreciated!

Luna was made at the Teams Glassworks; there was only ever one glassworks connected with Davidson and Abrahams and as Abrahams owned Davidson by the time Luna came along...

Brama was Abrahams' marketing brand. Calling it Davidson Luna is perhaps kind of lazy, but the issue is that Davidsons was the glass bit and Abrahams was the metal works. Strictly speaking it's Brama Luna.

The pattern on your bowl certainly looks the same as Luna.
