Seems like the mark of a shipping line? SS before the name of Dutch Ships.

You've probably realized this.

Probably not related, but the description reminded me a bit of this Sasaki Glass (Japan) label.

SS is the official designation for Steam Ship, as in SS Great Britain,

I was thinking along the lines of airlines etching their dinner ware and shipping lines, cruise liners ... I once had a lovely crystal ashtray with Meteor on it that I think was related to SS Meteor. SO I was thinking of this being a owner, rather than maker's mark? Oh, and SS isn't just for Holland. - ah, Steam Ship - of course! (thanks Christine)

I mush admit, in my mind did have a very specific image and I didn't think of the Japanese label that I had seen on your site some time ago (thanks for your excellent site Wayne, I use it all the time).

Is this the patern John?

I can't find a reference to the pattern 'Windflower'. but this set has a flower pattern.

I love Sasaki glass, it is so delicate and I have a water set with jug in the bamboo pattern.....glorious.

Hi Rosie not that one , the leaves and the flowers are fine straight line cuts that give the same unpolished look but much smaller leaves , i think mine are a lot older  i am not saying windflower is the name but a neighbour who is Japanese said they look a bit like what i call the windflower . cheers anyway , are you trekking to Cambridge Sunday?
